Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

mounting a phone

Hi,

I'm not keen on buying a go pro and was curious if anyone has successfully mounted a phone to a helmet, and how?

Have a hunt around for a car dashboard mount for your phone, maybe?

It'll look ridiculous, and the first time you take a tumble or fall afoul of someone bringing the lift bar down too far you'll probably have to buy a new phone.

Please do post pics of your setup, when you're done Little Angel

You'll want something like an Optrix mount

http://www.actioncameras.co.uk/iphone-mount-optrix-xd4

and maybe a chest harness if you don't want to expose it too much on your helmet.

Although, by the time you've bought all that, you're into entry level territory for a decent, proper helmet cam.

Thanks Feef & Serriadh I may just make my own. It seems a bit pointless buying a £300 camera to use it once or twice a year, only to be out of date within a couple.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

You find all sorts of things to do with it, not just skiing.

And tbh, you don't need to spend £300 on a camera, nor do you need to worry about it going out of date.

My 'old' Drift HD can record at 1080p at 30fps and 720p at 60fps, which is easily good enough for most things and especially so if you're just going to downgrade the quality to a reasonable file size or share on facebook and the like.

have a look at the Contour Roam at £169 http://www.actioncameras.co.uk/helmet-cameras/price/150-200

Or check out eBay, there's loads of deals on older models of cam for even £100, which brings some basic models into line with the cost of just renting one for a week

Is £60 cheap enough?

I got myself a chilli-tech bullet cam which I've been using this season if you are after something cheap that does the job, they also do a more go-pro esque model too. For some reason the bullet cam I have isn't on their main page Puzzled

If you just want to grab some reasonable vid at low cost, there are of course the 808 keyfob cams which give very good results for a few quid, to a few more quid (£20+) for 720p , to a lot more quid for 1080p (~£60+)

Loads of videos on the web showing results/quality, and a very good resource for the different models out there is at http://www.chucklohr.com/808/index.shtml

Just ebay for "808 keyfob cams" : the #16 version seems good for 720p video

<edit> this vid compares a #16 to GoPro

Tingbot, How about a cheap neoprene sleeve for the phone from ebay. Cut a hole in it where necessary and bash in a big eyelet from cheap eyelet kit to stop it fraying. Then sew on some inch wide elastic as and where necessary. Total cost about a fiver and a bit of time, if it doesn't work not much lost?

Ahh, sounds like the real problem is that you need to take up a new sport. Have you considered mountain biking, kiteboarding, kayaking?

I got an Ion camera from Sport pursuit a couple of months ago, exceptional value!1

It was about £150 including everything I needed to mount on my Ski Helmet, and it produces some really good quality video.

Win Win.

Thanks for all the advise guys, I bit the bullet and found the SONY HDR AS15 for £150 at Argos Very Happy (from a supposed £219). Looks to be a good buy for the price. Should come in handy with diving as well as the case will go down to 50+m, also does 120fms slow mo.

Review for anyone who interested:
