Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Republic - which skis to hire?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I normally get the red/silver skis from aplinresorts, but I think the 2 for 1 offer at Ski Republic will work out cheaper. I don't know anything about skis though, and I find the choice on there overwhelming. I normally stick to red/blue pistes - any advice?

pinball13, FWIW the only time we tried Ski Republic we were entirely disappointed with what we got offered vs. what we ordered and told them what they could do with their skis.

pinball13, Tell us bit more about your ski experience and expectations. If you are not very fussed about skis you might be OK.

Thanks Megamum, maybe I should stick to alpinresorts.

Chris Bish, I don't expect much from my skis, I just try to get down safely. I still find some red runs difficult, e.g. if it's icy or mogully - not enough to stop me having a go though Smile

pinball13, How many weeks' experience do you have? Do you ski parallel? Can you cope with soft snow? hardpack?

If you are just cruising down doing snowplough turns it really doesn't matter very much what skis you are on, as long as they are softish.

On the other hand, if you are starting to power your skis rather than just stand on them, you might want to make some choices.

Chris Bish, thanks for your help - but this is the problem - I don't speak the lingo! I think I can cope with soft snow and hardpack, but I'm not sure what these terms mean or if I could identify those conditions. Similarly I think I 'power' my skis but I've not used that term before (maybe that means I don't power my skis?). I have 4 weeks experience, including ~50 hrs of group tuition (that includes learning to ski in the first place), and I ski parallel. I've done couple of blacks and a little off-piste but I'm not planning on doing any of that this year, mainly reds and nice long blues.

Well, if it is any help, it took me a lot more than 4 weeks to start to notice any difference in skis. A possible conclusion is that you are just as likely to get suitable skis from Ski Republic as anyone else.

OK, sounds like I don't need to worry about it at my level of inability.

Don't get the own-branded cheapo ones from Ski Republic. Some friends of mine made this mistake once. They were the worst skis I have ever seen. Heavy, knackered, no wax...

Rule of thumb when hiring skis is talk yourself up. If you're a beginner, claim intermediate. You'll get the same skis, but they'll be from this year and will have been serviced. If you let on you're a beginner you'll get the most mashed up rusty garbage imaginable.

When they say "are you a good skier", look them in the eye and say yes!

Mr Pieholeo, Great point. I have previously been honest thinking they will give me 'beginner' skis. Last time I booked online in advance and said I was intermediate and got virtually new skis and brand spanking new boots. Smile Next time I shall tell them my name is Franz.
