Poster: A snowHead
|
Have been looking for the best options for a month long ski break (mid dec - mid jan) in the states and have found what SEEM to be a couple of great deals.
Copper / Winter Park season pass $360
Breckenridge / Keystone / A Basin $360
I was interested in Salt Lake although none of the resorts have any where near as good deals as the two listed above, though would love to hear any suggestions. Of the two listed above can anyone give any further information. Winter Park seems to have a good following on this site, would this possibly be the better option. What are the crowds like at these places? Best place to stay etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks All

nivag, I did something along these lines. You're aiming for a good spot so ignore a couple of dollars here or there regards the actual skiing. The skiing will be good whatever you do. Think about the other stuff. Also try Epicski, you'll get great advice and a lot of good contacts there.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Breck: bigger resort. Can get quite crowded (popular with Brits). It's good. Good nightlife too.
Keystone: smaller. Has night skiing. Good, but I haven't spent much time there.
A Basin: Steep and deep. Great for advanced skiers, but not much else.
Copper: Smallish resort, but good skiing for all abilities, also a couple of very nice back bowls.
WP: busy at weekends (lots of people from Denver come up on Saturday/Sunday). QUIET through the week. Excellent resort for all abilities, a good place to learn about bumps and powder (and to have fun in the trees). While there's a couple of good bars, and a few good restaurants, people tend to go there to ski rather than socialise. But if you do want a romantic dinner, once a week they do a gondola/dinner/sleigh ride at the top of the mountain.

Some of the Breck/Key passes also offer 10 days each season at Vail. Check if yours does, if so that would tip scale heavily. Other considerations: your trip dates are coming soon. As of 11/29/05 conditions in the section of Colorado you are looking at are much better than Utah (or anywhere else in the States), WP and Copper are separated by perhaps a 60-90 minute drive including a major mtn pass (Berthoud), Breck/Key/Abasin are all within about 20 easy miles of each other.
A-basin and the far reaches of Keystone may be good places to go when the worst crowds hit Breck between Christmas and NYs. Otherwise, crowds should be manageable everywhere before Christmas and after NYs.

Thanks for the advice fellas, appreciated. The pass you are talking about is a Colorado Pass, they stopped selling them about 2 weeks ago...gutted. Well have been looking at steamboat for a about 5 days, like the look of the town it don't look like much of a big resort type place and is well priced for a accomodation. What you guys think???

Breck, Key, WP and Steamboat are all roughly comparable in size, with Copper not too far behind. Steamboat might be marginally the largest and would make a fine component if you decided to do multiple destinations and passes, but if you spent your entire month at the Boat you'd be limiting yourself to less terrain variety than the other two pass choices previously considered. The Boat might be less crowded than the others including during Xmas week, but not as lively apres ski or with as many non-ski services as Breck and the town of Dillon/Frisco.
