I love the way the Mail mixes centigrade and fahrenheit (not to mention the present and the past) in a single sentence, to confuse its readers and stoke the melodrama ...
"As the rest of Russia is shivering in the grip of a typically bitter freeze - minus 6C in Moscow, minus 4C in St Petersburg and minus 30C in parts of Siberia - the temperature in this subtropical region reached 63F last February."
[See top link above]
The BBC publicity photo (right) is admittedly a classic.
Contextual note: the southern French and Spanish seaside resorts of Nice and Grenada are quite close to viable ski resorts (Isola 2000, Sierra Nevada etc.) The Russians are not idiots, and they put the first satellite (Sputnik) and man (Gagarin) into space.

The Daily Mail article was utter nonsense. The reporter was even worked up about the security implications of a car that was found with explosives nearby that was 180 miles away. It was also clear that the reason the reporter was not allowed into the Olympic Park hotel on arrival is that he didn't have his accreditation. Plonker

I do believe the KGB (SKGB) has a 'leader in resort'. "Best snow guns on upper slopes."

In addition to 30,000 police and soldiers, RIA Novosti reported that more than 400 Cossacks in traditional uniform will be on patrol, evoking the military pomp of the tsarist era. |
Anyone hereabouts going to Sochi? With press credentials? You lucky person!

Today's Sochi corruption forecasts
Kasper [president, International Ski Federation] defends claim that one-third of multi-billion dollar Sochi 2014 budget disappeared because of corruption

Quote: |
Kasper, long-time President of the International Ski Federation (FIS), told Switzerland's state broadcaster SRF that Sochi 2014 had been riddled with corruption since they were awarded the Winter Olympics and Paralympics by the IOC seven years ago. The 69-year-old from St Moritz claimed contracts were given to a "construction mafia" of businessmen closely linked to the Kremlin and Russian President Vladimir Putin. |

Every construction company that wants to do business in Russia needs to have good 'government relations'. That is not to say they are corrupt or criminal in any way, they just need to be in with the right people. I dare say there are bribes being paid in some cases but the article above is using 'mafia' in a pretty misleading way. If there is a problem with corruption then it's a problem for the host country and I'm not sure why so many western commentators are getting so worked up over it.

This is all marvellous, but one has to observe that relatively little of the $51 billion seems to have been spent on webcams on Rosa Khutor (at least the webcams the public are allowed to look at!)

... however, plenty will have been spent on the designs and constructions of Bernhard Russi - the Olympic racecourse designer who's dominated this field of activity for 30 years. Interesting video report about his work at Rosa Khutor (the downhill ski area for Sochi), linked via WTF Ski Club global media-monkey [you may need to scroll down for it] ...
