Poster: A snowHead

So google reckons 3h30min between Jackson and Big Sky, sounds interesting for a two centre holiday.
But is this a realistic winter journey time/ route, are their any passes that might get snowed up or any thing else that may make it impractical.

Very do-able & two excellent places. I did this last winter, although instead of Jackson we skied at Grand Targhee, which is on the other side of the Teton Pass. The roads will be passable unless there is a freak storm of some kind. These places depend on people being able to get there, so they clear the roads as fast as possible/practical. If you're lucky enough to have some kind of 2-3 foot storm while you're there it could make travel difficult, but hunker down ski where you are. That's a good problem to have. Rent a 4x4 or AWD car though. Last year I drove from Targhee to Big sky in the snow. It ended up being about 6-10in, but the roads were ok, just had to use extra caution. Nice thing about driving in that part of the world was that there weren't too many cars around. If you go, do a tour through Yellowstone on a snow mobile. Unbelievably time & well worth the $150 or so!
From what I remember, the only road on that route that would realistically close down would be the Teton Pass, but it usually wouldn't stay closed long. Not long enough to ruin a trip anyway

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

If you're a confident winter driver, should be no problem. Teton pass does get to some people because it's almost always got snow on the road due to high wind blowing snow around. And the locals get on your rear bumper if you're going slow. But with often poor visibility, it's not wise for those of us not familiar with the road to go as fast as the locals. Just ignore the tailgater and go at speed that's sensible.
Try not to lock yourself into a fix date to go from one to the other though. You really don't want to do Teton pass in the middle of a storm. Besides, you'll miss the scenery!

hobbiteater, If thats the time not a problem at all, were heading up to Jackson from Salt Lake City - 4.5 hours, then back again during our trip. Both legs will be after skiing too so we dont miss any days Have done it in daylight via Bear Lake and views stunning( no us to you though )
I would think Teton Pass is the only Pass that would cause problems, and they are good at clearing it too. As farlep99, 4x4/AWD is the way to go
