Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avalanche airbag and mitts - Will it be a problem if i ever need to pull the handle??

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just ordered a set of down mitts to try and keep my fingers warm after a miserable trip last year in -17degree temperatures.
Rest of my body is fine its just my fingers, got that bad one day i had to admit defeat and head for the bar early Sad

I use a Mammut Snowpulse airbag and suddenly thought this morning that it might be a problem getting a decent hold of the pull handle should the worse happen.

I will obviously have a few practice pulls with the mitts on before the next trip but would appreciated your thoughts and any experience people may have of airbags with mitts, good or bad.

I've had no problems with practise firing my mammut bag whilst wearing large mitts, but as I haven't actually used it in anger I can't tell you any more than that. I don't recall anyone ever claiming that using mitts with airbags was a terrible idea, least of all by the airbag manufacturers who'd have the most to lose if there was a problem, so that bodes well.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'd just ensure that they're a good fit with no 'bagginess' that would impede your grip.

The only difference might be how you grab it. I tend to grab the handle on my BCA between thumb and fingers, but I've seem some instinctively go for the handle between 3rd and 4th finger, and a mitt could hinder that. Just see what you do naturally

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

If you can hold a ski pole I think you'll be fine.

Well, not really. Airbag triggers tend to be T-shaped, and ski poles aren't. The tube attached to the handle fits nicely between the fingers if you've got gloves on.

OP: It is worth noting that it is harder to use a normal T-shaped shovel handle if you're wearing mitts. You might want to go shovel shopping.

Depends on the airbag. My BCA Float 30 had a cupped-disk shaped pull. I'm waiting for my new BCA bag to arrive, so I'm not sure if they've revised the handle or not.

I know what shape they are, I have the model that the OP refers to Happy On the Mammut Snowpulse it's easy to grip with mitts or gloves, you don't need to wrap your fingers around the "T", you can just grab it between thumb and palm and yank it, you need to use 10Kg of force (those units are wrong, force is not measure in Kg, but this is what the manual says), I think this is perfectly achievable with mitts. The benefit of the Snowpulse system is that you can test it out with the cylinder removed a few times (within reason, the manual says to get the device serviced after 20 "pulls").

I would only be worried if the mitts were very bulky or baggy (as spyderjon says) , but if they were I imagine you'd have trouble gripping a ski pole, hence my comment.

The old ABS used to have a fairly big circular hoop, Very easy to grab I guess, but I'd be worried about catching that on a tree or even hooking it with a ski pole by accident. Not seen those for a few years though.
