Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Recco reflectors: can you still buy them?

Suffered a traumatic loss over Christmas: videocam detached in a deep snow face-plant and two hours' digging did not unearth it. I know I should have had a security leash, but there was no obvious place to attach one and I assumed the camera manufacturer had tested its goggle mount to destruction in typical conditions. WRONG!

While digging, the thought did occur to me that a Recco sticker on the camera and a helpful piste patrol with a detector might have been my saviour. Yes, I know Recco's are supposed to be for avalanche rescue and there's the whole issue about false positives if there are lots of reflectors scattered about on things rather than people; but I always ski off-piste with full transceiver, shovel and probe and so should anyone else! I believe the record of Reccos in avalanche rescue is limited to retrieval of corpses, not true rescue. And most people likely to have bought Recco-equipped clothing never go anywhere near avalanche-prone slopes.

Anyway, any experience of using Recco reflectors on skis or other equipment; and can you buy them anywhere? They don't seem to be available from the usual suspects like S&R and EB. If not, a cheap kid's jacket with Recco from TK Max might need to be procured and attacked with a Stanley knife Toofy Grin )

Dummy cord it on, it'll be cheaper, although I'd love to see the look on the patrollers face when you rock up asking them to search for a camera.

But the liftie who spent two hours watching us digging was very sympathetic and helpful. He offered us use of his giant shovel and took contact details in case the camera turned up. And a couple of days later, he recognised me and gave me an update: no sign of the camera - not surprising as it had dumped a good 20cm since. I'm sure he'd have loaned me his Recco receiver!
