Hello SnowHeads...
We are two advanced off-piste powder-hounds on Telemark skis, planning our first ski trip in Europe (based in Paris). We want to wait on deciding where to go so we can hit the best possible snow. We have basic needs: looking for cheap, simple lodging (two beds, shower, kitchen a plus) say 100€ per night maximum. We’d prefer to not have a car and rely solely on trains and buses. Great off-piste snow is the priority, although a fun, picturesque town is a definitely plus.
Two questions: 1) WHERE TO GO? and 2) Can we arrive at a resort for 5 days without reserved accommodation? Would like to just sniff around and find a decent, basic place to sleep without ending up on the street or getting soaked. Crazy or genius?
Dates are January 19-24, 2014. Thanks for your advice!

Its such a quiet time then that I'd just leave it really to the wire and book a few days out based on current condition and future forecast. So many choices !
Southern alps / Dolomites are amazing just now, but who know, it may be incredible in places like Tignes in France.

I would definitely book some accomodation before you arrive, even if only a few days before. Could be a big stressful waste of time and potentially expensive if you arrive and can't find somewhere easily.

Rogue, Best snow I have seen so far this year is in Northern Italy so the Monterosa might be a good idea. It's a bit of a mecca for off-piste, Champoluc is the liveliest of the towns although at that time of year everything should be nice and quiet.
I'd book in advance myself, things shouldn't change tooo much in 12 days given forecasts, at least so you know you have something on arrival. Depends how adventurous you are...
An alternative might be TGV to Toulouse and hit the Pyrenees, apparently a good amount of snow down there too.

Hey thanks everyone! I'm definitely feeling more confident about holding out for good snow.
Any advice on websites with accurate forecasts? The resort website are hit-and-miss.

The other thing I suggest in terms of accomodations, is around the Dolomites area, there are several refuges/hostels, but with private rooms, half board, at or below the price point you're talking about, and these places are dotted across the ski area, at the tops of gondola's, etc...
I'm booked in such a place during school holidays, and I'm paying around 600 euro for 5 nights, incl lift pass, incl breakfast and dinner, at the mountain hostel in Flims-Laax, the place is at mid mountain where 7 different lifts converge, but they are plenty of these types of places in the Dolomites as well, just can't speak to the off-piste opportunities there, as I haven't actually skied there, only worked it out, then ended up choosing Swizterland for logistical reasons...

Why would you turn up somewhere without accommodation? Do you not have smartphones? You can google hotels or chalets from the bus station if you are inclined. What's wrong with making a call just before arriving to your chosen resort?
