shgc36, if the car has summer tyres you are much more likely to need chains. I would have needed chains loads of times since christmas, without winter tyres. Family members who were here with ordinary tyres at Christmas had their chains on and off half a dozen times during the week.

shgc36, an understandable reaction. I don't think the Swiss and French companies talk so nicely to each other. The Swiss are just being pragmatic, as usual.
Cheap chains generally fit a range of sizes so you could do a bit of deep research on the type of cars you are likely to get, the sizes of tyres you are likely to have and buy something for collection in shop? But is that worth €80 of your time?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I've gone for the 4-door hatchback group - it just says Megane or similar. Golf? Focus? The usual bog standard family 4-door hatchback. Unless it's some sport version with 17" wheels for example I'm sure the wheel size for this bracket of car will be similar. So I have a rough idea. Regardless, the chains won't cost 140 euros!
Mind you, I went to Flaine in summer a few years ago to watch the Tour de France when it came through that area and to do some cycling round there. We booked a car in this same rental group. Two of us with bikes. When we turned up to pick up the car, we were told that they didn't have anything in the group available so we were given a Renault Grande Espace. It was like a bus!
I've had plenty of options given to me on here for retailers - Feu Vert, Carrefour, Norauto, petrol stations and possibly any large supermarket. I'm sure I will find the ones needed.

Personal experience of hiring at the French side of Geneva:
- you don't get winter tyres
- you'll be lucky to get snow chains even if you pre book them
- the chains won't be in the car, make sure you have them before you leave the hire desk
- you'll probably won't get the car you booked
I've been driving to Flaine for the last 10 years - most times I've been fine with own & hire cars and only used chains twice in that time but without them we would have been stuck
Not worth taking the chance IMO

We have just come back from France - hired car through French side of GVA (because extra driver incuded for free). No winter tyres of course and we were quoted (Europcar via Holiday autos) something like 120 euros for chains. We fully intended then to go and buy some at the hypermarket near the French exit from GVA but when it came to it Europcar "only" charged 35 or so euros . Very very glad we had chains as we needed them several times in the 3V - won't hire again from the French side as in the particular conditions we would have managed if we had had winter tyres. Will pay the extra and hire from Swiss side next time and have both winter tyres and snow chains!

hi Villz
Do you mean that you hired some chains from the Europcar desk for 35 euros?

Ok, so we popped into th Carrefour by Jct17 yesterday and they stock three qualities of chain and about a dozen or so sizes in each with each size doing a dozen or so tyre profiles.
The cheapies costed €20 (unbranded and looked cheap)
The mid range costed €50/60 depending on size (Michelin Branded)
The expensives cost €150.
