Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

kat.ryb, CG was banned from the SCGB forum and then he was ejected from the club altogether, so SCGB have created a situation whereby this is pretty much the only place to debate with his old foes.

Why not set up the British Bored of Forum Censors?

This thread's one of the most popular in snowHeads history, no thanks to you and your fellow censors. "SCGB history" is part and parcel of why helmets took off in the UK, at a time when the Ski Club was still a flickering candle of influence. SCGB matters have hardly dominated the thread.

A large number of helmets have been mis-sold in this country, and safety equipment should never be flogged on that basis. If there's an honest argument for them, why aren't they sold that way? And how come helmet makers put dangerous music phones inside them?

Michael Schumacher's accident is absolutely pivotal in this story, and it can be discussed as the community wishes to discuss it. Sod your censorship.

We need a new forum rule. Comedy Goldsmith and PJSki are an embarrassment to SCGB, an embarrassment to themselves and to SH with all this petty squabbling and derailing of threads.

Guys, take it to SCGB forum, or to PMs, or to the pub. Anywhere but here.

I think we need a new furum rule where any squabbling by those two over ancient SCGB history results in an instant ban!

The word on the street (I have friends in low places) is that a media organisation in Germany (possibly Bild) appear to be claiming they have helmet cam footage of the Schumacher accident - not made clear whether that's a bystander's helmet cam or his own (the latter highly unlikely I'd have thought). I guess when you think about a busy New Year piste and the number of helmet and chest cams out there, someone was almost bound to have captured the moment and are probably punting it to the highest bidder. Could get quite grotesque all this.

I think we probably all agree that, in this particular, specific accident, a helmet saved a life.

However, if Michael had not been wearing a helmet, this particular, specific accident would not have occurred. I'm not talking subjectives, like risk compensation, but about the physics. A helmet is a physical thing. It's not like wearing a different beanie. It has volume and it has weight, therefore, the body has to make adjustments for this. Michael's C of G, and therefore his balance, would be changed. Therefore his fall would too. And it's consequences, for better or worse.

You can't really mean that. Helmets weigh grams, not kilos. What total rubbish.

Not at all rubbish, accidents like this are about split second timing and millimeters can make the difference between an accident or not, the very time it took to put a helmet on will change the whole dynamics of the day slightly, of course it works both ways, you could also avoid being in the wrong place at the wrong time by taking the time to put a helmet on

Bode Swiller, according to Dauphin Libere Schumacher was wearing a camera helmet, though it's not clear if it was on when he fell. They claim German media also has photos of the accident. Apparently the investigators are interviewing witnesses including family members (which you would anticipate).

It is fair to say that if I had bindings that were not designed to release I would ski more carefully.

Therefore the best way to improve ski safety would be to insist on all skiers having their bindings set on the maximum DIN setting.

Same difference, wearing a helmet or even just a different pair of gloves will change the line you take through the day, even if it's just a couple of millimeters either side, it's enough to make the difference between an accident or not

It was impressive to see all the camping cars with huge satellite dishes parked outside the hospital. One wonders why the bbc needs an ob unit and two journalists outside a dreary alpine hospital. The journalists have a little tent with some high power lamps from where the take turns to do their pieces to camera. It was a dreek afternoon' rather them than me.

No no no no no
Risk Compenstaion says that if you wear safety gear you will be less safe
So to avoid ski juries, instead of not skiing at all, one should ski more.
And because skiing slowly would , to any common person, appear to be safer than skiing fast, it is in fact a trap, and therefore to be safer you should ski faster, also because that way you will get out of the way of any potential accident quicker.
It's simple really

Bug..., that is unless a butterfly flap it's wings on Mars ....

I'm out ... Oh wait, that's not safe.... I'm bak in again

Is NEARLY the right answer but not quite

everyone here is wrong - in that you are all not right.

A have all these discussions, don't close down the thread, but accept that your own tiny piece of information or experience is only part of the story, and is probably wrong

Personally I find it a great mantra in life, I am continually learning from other people, especially those whose views violent,y disagree with my current views. And sometimes I change my mind. It's so much nicer not having to be right all the time

Except the bloke who seemed nice but then wanted to kick some mother in her goolies - now even open minded me couldn't quite see that point of view ...?

I hope that MS makes a full recovery. His is a very unfortunate and very sad situation for any individual, family or community to have to deal with. I am sure that anyone here who has suffered a serious injury or indeed seen similar or worse happen to family or friends will not for a moment have forgotten the sad origins of this thread and hope only that the news from his hospital room continues to be positive.

As a regular reader of this forum with a great respect for the knowledge and experience that many on here are generous enough to share I feel compelled to add that I also hope that the credibility of this website, more specifically the individuals and community that exist(s) within, is not damaged by the partisan mud slinging that is going on here. The presentation of a large number of suppositions doesn't help either. But then who am I to judge whether these are in fact suppositions? I think I'd best hold back from further comment as I'd hate to be misinterpreted without having full facts to hand to back up my opinion.

akirk, thank you for posting your enlightening thoughts.

Get well soon MS.

In terms of wisdom, I'm thinking of biblical proportions. In terms of shit produced, I'm probably thinking diapers, but perhaps that's just a fetish. In terms of constructive argument then it's more like road runner and coyote (which one are you?). You probably outweigh them on one count Wink

Investigators in France are examining a camera which had been fixed to the ski helmet of injured Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher, media reports say.

Authorities were hoping the device may reveal clues about the circumstances of his skiing accident in the French Alps, a source told the AFP news agency.
