Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Zell am See Options

Hi there.

Me and 3 fellow Irish fellas are looking to head to Zell am See/Kaprun on 8th March. We've booked the flights from Belfast with Jet2 and are now looking to get the accomodation sorted.

We are in our late 20's / early 30's, and apres is a key feature of the holiday and as we are all 6-7 weekers, we enjoy cruisey reds over steep mogul fields or off-piste.

There seems to be a big difference in the price of accomodation at Zell centre as opposed to Schuttdorf or Kaprun, therefore our queries are:

- Is Zell am See centre the liveliest apres area or is there enough in the Schuttdorf area?
- Would you recommend staying in the centre of Zell over either Kaprun or Schuttdorf?
- Can you walk from the centre to the Schuttdorf area after a night out, or how expensive and frequent is the local taxi service?
- Which is the best area for cruisey red and blue runs?
- Which are the best apres bars, particularly earlier in the evening?

Hoping to book the accomodation over the next few days so would be keen to get any ideas in advance. Very Happy

You just described Saalbach-Hinterglemm, rather than Zell am See. Zell is a nice family-friendly cruisey resort, but S-H is far more extensive and definitely has better, livelier après. Zell, Maiskogel and Kaprun are reached by a ski bus rather than being linked so can seem like separate areas, whereas Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang is one large linked area.

Anyway, back to your questions:
- Definitely stay in Zell rather than Schuttdorf. Schuttdorf is great for families, but a bit quiet if you are looking for plenty of bars and nightlife. Kaprun is even quieter. You'll need a taxi to get from Schuttdorf to Zell and back - don't know the current price, but it won't be cheap. Taxis are however plentiful and are available all night.
- All of the area above the Areitbahn and Schmittenhohe lifts is a mixture of cruisey blues and reds. There is some fantastic skiing on the glacier above Kaprun, particularly on a sunny spring day.
- Early evening après: Schnapps Hans at the top of Schmittenhohe, Crazy Daisy, the Irish bar whose name I can't remember (but why would you travel to Austria to visit an 'Irish' bar) and a few others - there are a couple of Snowheads who are based in Zell who have written on other threads, so use the search function for more info.

I'd want to stay in Zell if I were you over other places in the area. Saalbach Hinterglemm is a much bigger ski area but the Zell am see town is really, really nice and has some lively bars at night. It's hotels are quite upmarket but I always find you get decent value for money in Austria compared to France and lol Switzerland, and the drink prices are nowhere near as obscene.

I think you can spend a tiny amount more on your lift pass and get Saalbach Hinterglemm included, together with a lot of other Austrian ski areas.
