Who's best to book off piste insurance with, either single trip or annual policy. I can't remember who I used last year. I already have bank insurance policy, so only need top up.
Thanks

You really need to read the policies to see which meets your need, for what its worth I use Dogtag for me and the kids.

Partly depends on what you want to do. With or without a guide? Could there be time you might be solo? For the best cover, see what you think of BMC insurance. it's expensive, though, and you may have to join the BMC, as well. Dog Tag and Snowcard also have their fans.

Or just use AAC for £45 if you don't mind giving up some of the full aftercare medical cover expenses.

I use Austrian Alpine Club to top up my bank insurance and get me off the mountain (covers off-piste). Only £35 for a year at my age

MPI brokers worth having a look at, too. Read the small print VERY carefully before deciding which policy to take if you are going off piste without a guide. I have MPI brokers insurance for the first time this year and was interested to receive an email from them last week highlighting the potentially very dangerous off piste conditions which have been discussed here on Snowheads.

k1orange, I don't think "top up" works with insurance, unless its to extend an existing policy. I always use BMC annual insurance, only needed to claim once (ice climbing accident) but they were brilliant. IMHO insurance is not one of those things you choose on the lowest price

On the rocks, It works if you have insurance for travel, but then get a mountaineering / Alpine club separate insurance for climbing / skiing as this specialist insurance will only cover for that which the other insurance will not.

We have bank insurance, which does not cover for off-piste skiing. So looking at taking out the AAC insurance to add on, but the AAC from what I can see only covers you for 10,000 euro of medical expenses, do you think that is enough? But it does cover the cost of getting you back to the UK when I guess the NHS would take over.

thunderer, Well I view the AAC as more rescue cover than medical, the ACC will get you off the mountain (in a helicopter if needs be) and to the hospital where your regular travel insurance should take over. And as you say it will also get you back home.

You know it makes sense.

davkt, The AAC also does cover repatriation to a certain extent if you read through all their terms. And depending on the country the EHIC also covers a lot. You need to be careful if you are relying on your std insurance to cover you for the aftermath of an off piste accident because that will be an exclusion. It's a minefield.

Avalanche Poodle, Yes agree standard travel insurance/Free bank insurance would not top up cover as it excludes any claim if resulting from an excluded activity.
I guess on the basis we ski only occasionally off-piste ( and then mostly close to the piste or itinerary type routes) it is probably worth the risk that AAC cover would sort out the aftermath sufficiently to deal with most problems (up to 10,000Euro + E11C) and get you back to the UK. Mind we are also going to the USA for a couple of weeks ????
Also standard travel insurance once back to the UK stops paying, and you are then reliant on the NHS.

Avalanche Poodle, For me the Dogtag will cover the aftermath, AAC like Carte Neige would just make things easier getting off the mountain!

Indeed. If you have an accident in circumstances excluded by your "normal" travel insurance (e.g. on a closed piste, let alone off piste) they can legitimately refuse to pay anything, for anything.
