I'm going for a long weekend on my own to Valloire in January. It's not a resort many Brits frequent. Any tips on how to have a great time in a ski resort completely in your own company?
I look forward to the helpful and the funny comments

Ski in fancy dress as a spy and stalk people. You need to ski with a newspaper held out with a hole cut in it, and stop when they do.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

It depends whether you are happy in your own company or whether you want to meet other people. If the former, take a book/kindle/DVD player to keep yourself entertained when you are not skiing. If the latter, introduce yourself to people and hope they don't treat you as if you have green feelers growing out of your head. When I have been skiing by myself in the past I've been lucky enough to join ski guiding days and got to know people that way, not sure if anyone still runs these in France given the ESF ruling. Also sitting by yourself in a restaurant or bar is considered far less weird in Europe than in the UK, so no need to feel self conscious about that.

garethjomo, I've just returned from a late notice weeks leave where I was skiing 'billy-no-mates' in 3v. I had lots of fun days and only skied with the same group twice when I remembered that (a) a mate had a place there and that (b) they were likely to be out there, so I hooked up with them for a couple of days
One of the standout days was when I skied with ex-Ski Dazzle seasonaires, Rob & Bekki - leaving La Tania on first lift I'd noticed that they were following the same route/similar pace as me. I hopped in their bubble, rather than taking the next one and got chatting. We ended up skiing together all day and ripped up Val Thorens, Orelle and a bit of Les M. A picnic on the piste @ 2700m in December was a highlight as was the first vin chaud of the season for me in the Bouc Blanc
I'd talk to everyone and see how you get on - Valloire as you say is less popular with the brits so it might be a bit harder. My plan B was to stuff my kindle in my goggles pocket and not be afraid to dig it out in the restaurant etc..

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've got three weeks solo coming up this Jan / Feb! To be fair it's really only one week as I'm doing the Birthday Bash and a week at UCPA.
The remaining week is booked through Mark Warner. I have no expectations as far as finding people to eat / ski with but hey, it was a good deal and I get a double room to myself for no supplement Im going to be doing some lessons through New Generation so hope to meet a few people that way.

I've done a three day trip on my own and it was fine, i skied alone and explored at my own pace. My helmet has audio i just listened to radio 2 as i cruised the slopes.
Evenings was a few beers sat at the bar, chatted to a few barmen, got a pizza and back to my room for a nightcap and a few episodes of 24 on Netflix.
I really like my own company though so i was very happy.

I have done three solo trips.
I take a camera and ask people to take my photo , its a great way to get talking to people.
I find watching football in a bar can lead to conversation starter.
Wearing an unusual hat gives people reasons to talk to you.
In Soll I tried to start a conversation with a skier wearing a Liverpool hat but it was very limited as he was Norwegian.
Two out of the three trips I found ski buddies.

I'm staying half board so hopefully make some conversation in the hotel at dinner. My French isn't the best though but hopefully enough to start off some conversations before they give up and decide it's easier to speak English to me!

Also, talk to people on lifts. Amazing the variety you meet from all over the world.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.
