Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

3 Scottish ski centres now in operation [re-titled thread]

Update: Late November snowstorms have dumped enough snow on the eastern Scottish ski areas to trigger a start of the season. Scroll below for developments ....
-----------------------------------------------------------
Winterhighland.com is looking to Friday's storm to put 50cm of snow on the northern and eastern Cairngorms, with "near hurricane force" winds causing deep drifting and very varied snow cover.

The ski area at The Lecht is predicted to come off best from this northerly storm, so there's some excitement at the possibility of pre-December skiing at that location.

Here's the full Winterhighland report.

Well that's the end of T-shirt and shorts (or kilts) weather, the locals might even put a jacket on.

If you want to keep tabs on the conditions, here are Cairngorm Mountain's two live webcams:

From Daylodge, looking toward Coire Cas and summit.
From Ptarmigan: upper slopes of the mountain.

[Edit] ... and a third one that's not on the Cairngorm Mountain website:
The Coire Cas carpark [not sure how often this one is refreshed]

David Goldsmith, wouldn't expect to see much on those cams for a couple of days snowHead

Wind strength and direction aren't great for Cairngorm, Northerlies tend to blow snow straight over the back towards Loch A'an.

Butchart's and Carn Aosda should fill nicely at Glenshee. I might be needing a sneaky day off next Monday or Tuesday when things calm down a bit wink

brian, Will Glenshee benefit from this storm too? I am planning a days skiing on the 2nd or 3rd of January as I am up in Scotland over new year. Is there normally any skiing to be had in the first week in January in Glenshee?

ginger winger, it's becoming near-impossible to make predictions about the Scottish snow pattern through the winter. If you'd asked that question back in the 1970s, or most of the 1980s, the answer would have been "yes". The past 15 years have been a sad record of unreliability ... hence the fact that Glenshee went bankrupt (but has been rescued).

With forecasts (reliable?) of a colder-than-recent winter, I guess there's a fighting chance you'll get to ski in early Jan, but I wouldn't put money on it.

ginger winger, yes, Glenshee and the Lecht will get the best of any snowfall in the next few days I think. The freezing level looks a bit touch and go late Friday into Saturday but if it stays low enough they may be able to open up some runs next week.

January in Glenshee has been hit and miss in recent years (more miss tbh Sad ). It's still a long way away, this week's snow could be built on or completely washed away by mild rainy weather. I'm quite hopeful though, by the end of this cold spell we'll have had about 3 weeks of blocked -ve NAO weather, which is good early support for the Met Office's forecast of a colder than average winter.

If conditions do look good at New Year, I'll see you up there snowHead

At this stage the Meso-scale models aren't going to tell us a whole lot about whats going to happen where on Friday (GFS and thus snow-forecast etc), some now-casting and above all watching whats up-wind, and waiting is the name of the game.

Latest News24 forecast had a 60mph slapped over Inverness for 8am Friday morning, given that is mean speads if we do get any significant snow showers tonight or tomorrow morning it will be an enteraining rush hour around Inverness, shall have to get the mountain bike and annoy the hell out of SUV drivers as I speed past them! The wind is in the wrong direction for most of the fences in Cairngorm. For most runs it will have been blowing along the fence lines and most of the snow will have blown over the back. Daylodge should be loaded and the traverse. Lets see if Cairngorm have got the Daylodge poma operable as promised.

There's plenty of chatter on the Winterhighland forum about the possibility of some lift-accessed skiing in Scotland this weekend. That said, the blizzards and winds, conditions of roads and general challenges in kick-starting a ski mountain this early in the winter are not to be trifled with!

To keep tabs on what's happening on the hills, the snow and lift reports on the Ski Scotland website are the best port of call:

It seems that The Lecht, Glenshee and Cairngorm might each have the potential to offer skiing - with Sunday being the best bet for things to calm down and become 'operational'. The Lecht is usually the quickest and most flexible to capitalise on 'lucky snow', though their access road is notorious for blocking when things get really tasty!

Let's see what happens.

Latest word is that The Lecht could open as soon as Saturday morning "weather permitting", and that most runs are complete.

Their recorded message on 01975 651440 is apparently giving the latest news.

Latest from the 3 ski centres operating today is that The Lecht will run up to 5 lifts, Glenshee up to 6 lifts, and Cairngorm will run its funicular only.

The western areas - Glencoe and Nevis Range - have no imminent plans to open. It seems that less snow has fallen on that side, and Nevis Range's access gondola is currently being serviced. Glencoe plan to open on 17 December, and Nevis Range on 20 December.

Yad Moss is also operating its poma today, if you want to ski further south, but conditions are reportedly quite thin.

Yes it is! But not when the skiing is operating.
In winter their visitor management policy - which is very strict, to stop people tramping over the sub-arctic vegetation on the upper slopes of Cairngorm (they have to hike it 500m up from the carpark to enjoy these pleasures) - allows for skiers to exit the top station, because they're sliding rather than tramping (most of the time).
