Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

That's a clear misrepresentation of what you claim to be a misrepresentation on my part.

What I've said is that is that I usually don't ski with a transceiver, and generally ski with others who don't use them, but ...

... if I'm with a guide (or anyone else) who requires their use on a mutual potential rescue basis, then I'll certainly and happily ski with a transceiver.

I also don't a have a "strict no beacon policy" when standing on the top of hills with a large burning fire, since this would disrupt communications.

Mr David goldsmith :
Over the years, You have been told personally by e mail and possibly face to face as well as on line that PJSki is not Gerry Aitken of SCGB.
Gerry has also responded to concerns of staff and council to assure them that he is not PJSki and,as far as I am aware they, in common with the rest of us, are still unaware of that persona's identity.
Regarding the other pseudonyms which you attribute to GA, I have no idea - I only asked him about this "active" posting name.
Please act with a little common courtesy and STOP tarring a SCGB official with your malicious slurs.

Please cite the email/face2face/online communications you're referring to. I'm quite happy for you to date and quote them - I don't recall any of them.

Most people felt this was finally settled 4 months ago ...

Me too. Putting a transceiver on is part on my morning routine when skiing.

David Goldsmith, 1.how do you think that I would have access to Gerry's or your personal e-mail?
2. I seem to recall Gerry telling you at a SCGB AGM that he had nothing to do with the persona 'PJSki'
3. Do you think I have nothing better to do with my time than trawl the internet- you are the expert on that one and have the time to do it.

We have all noticed on many occasions how selective your memory can be.

You knowing my real name would make no difference as we have never been introduced. I am just an ordinary member of SCGB and of the human race, which should reassure you that I am not (and have never been) a part of the SCGB managerial hierarchy

I know who you are because of your "appearances" at the SCGB AGMs and I actually find the concept of a 'Comedy Goldsmith' rather ridiculous - why not try ' Tragic' or 'Elephant' as more suitable monikers?

homers double, HoneyBunny, sorry! But remember it was out and out snowHeads who first got drawn in by MrG's ridiculous comments (Admin, Megamum etc) before the rests of us, some SCGB, many not or unknown status, joined in.
This was what we had to endure for years on the SCGB forum before DG was stopped from posting there.

BTW for what it's worth, having got into the habit of carrying my kit and borrowing a transceiver whenever skiing with SCGB and other guides and instructors I have bought my own for the coming season and intend to carry all kit at all times - whilst skiing the Tarentais tour last year we skied down a piste with a large avalanche scree 10 metres to the side - frightening!

I think the overriding message is that no slope which is skiable can be 100% guaranteed not to slide, whether inbounds or out of the resort boundary.

Some areas are statistically and historically safer than others and it's your choice whether you wear an avalanche transceiver and carry a shovel & probe.

With the push to open more and more terrain incidents like this will become all too frequent I fear

Inbounds slide at Alta
Three partially buried, no injuries reported

And seeing as all too many tragic deaths occur due to avalanches "just" off piste - especially where terrain traps are part of the danger, carrying a transceiver, probe and shovel even when on piste may save a life, even that of CG when "inbound" (although in his case my transceiver would be less useful than shovel and probe)

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person
Hi, I am new to this thread & not visited sH since the PSB. No hidden identity from me, if anybody does not know who I am, and wan't to, from sH or SCGB forums, just ask. There is a lot of animosity, historical stuff, and interesting reading in this thread and a resent "axe sharpening" comment - that I think shows a degree of bias. Whether I suffer any of that then others will judge me on.

I took the trouble of reading the thread from 2007 referred to buy PJSki, where he said DG has said he had not held a transceiver. DG did not say that in that thread, unless it has since been deleted; but he did say "I conventionally ski off-piste with friends but usually no specialised avalanche kit ... unless I'm in a guided/instructed group (e.g. St Anton). My most recent experience in St Anton was that transceivers were issued, but not shovels." Clearly he is saying that transceivers were in that experience handed out in his group, and in this thread he has said he uses what the group requires! So on that evidence PJSki is wrong, whoever he may be. I recall from a few years ago when I used the SCGB forum regularly that there was an arguing style used by Gerry A that is uncannily similar, on both topic and style, to that of PJSki that make it incredibly believable that they are one and the same.

That SCGB thread of 2007 has an interesting debate in it and i have to say that DG makes some very good points about evaluating the relative merits of different safety equipment and individual choices on whether you choose to use them. His points were rather poorly argued against by some and I see similar pattern in this thread, i.e. ridicule often without much basis in fact, and often just opinion and we are all supposedly entitled to that; even DG.

So, where do I stand; I will use what equipment I think appropriate for the conditions and the people I am with. Predominantly with transceiver off-piste, but also without. And it is my business only, unless you ski with me; not if you are on the same mountain or near me. The law is the law and that is the end of the matter if somebody wishes to do something within it, even DG; it is nobody else's business on a ski forum or otherwise. Express an opinion by all means, but we are all entitled to them without ridicule from the majority, which by the way does make then right, i.e. being of the majority.

Put on tin lid and dive for trench!

sahsah, I've often skied off piste and without the kit on areas I know such as forested runs where I judge there to be negligible avi risk, plus no one to see me even if it did happen. On other terrain I take all the kit and ski in groups that I trust. Not a black and white issue.

sahsah, You are entitled to have an opinion. Though you are not entitled to avoid mockery and ridicule of your opinion if you choose to share it. That way lies blasphemy laws and the like. The majority opinion is not always the right one either!!!

There are lots of places you could ski without a transceiver. It's snowy all over here at the moment and I'm not wearing one to go to the shops. The important point is to know when and where it is appropriate to use one. Like for example a lot of off-piste skiing terrain, even where the average slope angle is low there can often be pockets of steeper terrain that could slide. There have been some excellent examples of burials right next to pistes posted on this very forum due to that fact. DG eschews by his own admission even this useful knowledge and only skis with kit to effect companion rescue when told too.

The benefits to using a transceiver are not mere opinion either and there is a large body of literature available that even the least internet savvy could find if they wanted too. So DG ventures way beyond a difference of opinion into the realm of deliberate ignorance and dangerous advice. He does this in the old thread linked as well with his advocacy of avi cords, a tool which is demonstrably bad and even his own source revised his position in a later book published as recently as the 70's! The quality of the counter-argument also has nothing to do with the quality of DG's argument. He could write unopposed and still be wrong just like any other weirdo pontificating online.

Have a nice Christmas though.

Advice is only dangerous if you you are daft enough to believe and apply without the knowledge/consideration to make appropriate judgements.

Does having a different opinion justify ridicule? I think not. Take the blasphemy you refer to, if I was to go there, it is undeniably in each and every religion a figment of mans imagination in all respects; but I would not dream of ridiculing someone who chose to be religious, not even extremists or terrorists, what they need is explanation, understanding and better judgement.

The degree of bias is as determined by who wrote it, i.e. who the axe was sharpened for; not me.

Never going to happen, but as I have fallen out of luv a bit with the Skeeb over the last few weeks for various reasons (my grading for one Sad ), I'm not really bothered what the special one says any more. I only challenged him here on the grounds of safety.

That's all, have a good one.
