DB, seen several of those on people on the pistes around Ski Amadé already this year - not quite so garish as that one but definitely the same "high tech powder king/queen fartbag" They all looked like prats to be honest, especially the Mum nursing her 2 kiddies down the blue piste in a rather violent orange one! I thought the sun had fallen out of the sky!

I love threads like this - much chance for folk airing bitterness at the shocking revelation that, gasp, some people have more money than we do, and like to spend it!.
The "I bought a jacket for beans and so feel I can laugh at someone for spending huge money on a very expensive one" is like saying "I bought a Skoda Yeti, so all people that buy Range Rovers are idiots". It's not true. The Range Rover is a better car. Perhaps not exponentially so compared to the price difference (law of diminishing returns etc), but someone wanted it, rather than a Skoda Yeti.
Silly people.

Harry Flashman, I’d liken it more to 2 people buying identical range rovers, with the only differentiating feature being is that one has a gold plated paint finish.... both perform the same for all intent purposes but the one with the gold plated finish is worth 10x that of the other version. Certain people buy this gold plated version for bragging rights!
I'd like to point out that i'm neither in the 'kjus buying' category or the aldi trawling category... I invest in quality items of clothing that I feel are worth it, but to me £1200 for a jacket that preforms no better than my goretex jacket is exorbitant to say the least.

My GoreTex Phoenix Jacket doesn't seem so bad price wise these days, as it's already had a couple of outings this season - it's 18th!

Not in my experience, a very good friend has a Rolex Oyster, it's timekeeping is rubbish compared to my Suunto, plus he has to send it back to Switzerland at huge expense for servicing. Total waste of money, no problem gettingan expensive watch, but it should at least tell the time accurately.

Spyderman, This is because automatic movement is less precise than a quartz one by a few minutes per month, doesn't make it rubbish as it's easily adjustable and yes you need to service this kind of watch from time to time or at least have it checked, but they will last pretty much forever and you can leave them to your grandchildren.

No need to send it back to Switzerland either- find a local watch place that can service it- when the mainspring snapped on my Speedmaster Northern Goldsmiths wanted £1195 to do the job: local watch place replaced it for £30....

Spyderman, Rolex have a workshop in East London so no need (if in the UK) to send back to CH. And only needs servicing every 7 years or so.

I think it boils down to that people have more money than sense and these ridiculously over priced jackets are extensions of their ego....
That being said, if you're that rich and can comfortably afford one of these jackets then feel free to do so... Just not under the guise that's it's anything else other than a status symbols as these jackets have no functional benefits over jackets a fraction of the price.

I'm very glad that Kjus jackets exist, in snow and rock - made me feel much more comfortable about buying my Salomon one, which cost over £300, though my previous jacket, a high performance Head one, bought in a sale, has absolutely nothing wrong with it.

It's odd, but generally Kjus branded gear doesn't seem to be very well associated with the best skiers that I see (unless they are sponsored by them).

really? I thought million feeters just wore their same old tattered CMH fartbag to signal how long they've been heliskiing and spanky gear was just for newcomers. To clarify I suspect most of the people I've seen probably have some sort of industry hook-up as they get enough skiing in and probably don't pay retail for gear anyway.

I have a pair of Kjus ski trousers I bought in a closing shop sale in Verbier...cost me about £100.
They are very nice...but not really differentiated from any other decent pair of ski trousers that would be in the £100-£200 price range where you get top quality fabrics etc.
That jacket is miles out of my price range, but then again so is a bottle of premier crus claret.
Some people buy £2.99 plonk, some people pay £500 a bottle.
They are both red wine, but they are not the same thing.
I think the real market for those jackets is not the ego buyer....it is the "that's nice I'll have one buyer"
Those buyers don't ask the price, the price is of no interest...if it was £120 they'd buy it, if it was £1,200 they'd buy it....
I have met such people in my life...they were actually very nice.

if people wish to spend that much, fair play. They've possibly earned the right not to shop for bargain basement ski wear from TKM/Moffats/wherever. Quite what ego has to do with it, I have no idea

+1. Of course there are people for whom the price literally is irrelevant because they have more money than they can spend. I too have met them and come across plenty through my work. Like the population at large, some are very nice, unassuming people, and some are total ****s.

rungsp, quite right! My wife bought me a Kjus jacket for Xmas, and I have got to say that it is brill! The thing is just simply thought through... better than any jacket I've had before. I foresee this thing lasting me ten years, over which time it will have paid for itself several times over.
I'm going to drive down to Sport Conrad and buy myself the trousers next week!

Some of the fashion houses charge exorbitant prices for ski wear, Chanel springs to mind, but I suppose that is the nature of their business and the customers of those brands have more money than sense and dont mind paying for the name. Out of all of the dedicated ski wear brands, Kjus seem to take the pee the most. Salomon etc make fantastic gear for a premium but not too un-reasonable price IMO. No need to pay anymore than £300 for a mens jacket unless you want to buy 'a name'.
