Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Calling all Boot fitters - AT boot sole replacement...?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Are there any boot fitters out there in the UK that can replace the soles on my BD Quadrants?

I'm hoping to get the replacement soles from BD (just emailed them)

Just need the front sole replacing please - due to a not quite so good idea Sad

Thanks

Perhaps take them to a local cobblers who does Vibram hiking and climbing boot re-soles. Or there are mail order shops that many climbers use. I know that Altberg re-sole their own boots.

If I ever get some pin bindings I'll be doing the same thing on my Dynafits.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks,

That's an option I had considered but assumed/ thought a ski boot fitter/ ninja would be a better idea (grinding/shaving to get the old sole off?)

Holding out for one of the many ski boot Gods on here.

Definitely not in the DIY camp - that's part of the reason I'd like to replace them...

to get a good job you are going to have to go to a specialist with

1 the correct soling material
2 a proper sole press and the right glue, the press we have is not big enough to do the job on that boot properly and home made presses will not exert enough force

someone like LSR is probably the best bet in the UK

CEM,

Thanks mate, I'm hoping to get the soles from BD - they have a part no in their spares catalogue...

Yup, I wouldn't attempt a full resole with confidence, converting my Dynafits to Alpine DIN conformation was another matter. Looks rough but it seems to work fine Toofy Grin

Avalanche Poodle,

Funnily enough that's the reason I want to get them resoled .... thought the sole was the issue - it wasn't - the heel was too wide for my new look bindings which I didn't spot until I'd mutilated the front 2inches of the sole - doh Embarassed Sad

I probably could just repair that section with clamps and a bit of vibram sole cut to fit and may well end up doing so if its going to be a headache getting them resoled fully.

Recommend any decent industrial/ professional glue?

I used Defcon 2 ton epoxy resin, it's the stuff I use for knife making. But I was simply doing a plastic to plastic bond http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=104413

While I was researching this I looked at many sites where people used Gorilla Glue etc, but for a decent bond you should be using a specific sole glue, apply to both surfaces, allow to dry then heat up and pressure clamp together. I'd say that unless you were strapped for cash just post to a repairer with your specified choice of sole, there are plenty of hiking boot repairers.

This place does a huge variety of sole plates, you could just buy an appropriate one, cut to fit and glue.

Avalanche Poodle,

Thanks, that gives me a few options to look at - will hinge on being able to get replacement soles from BD to undo my over enthusiastic DIY...
