Hiya,
Not sure if I'm in the right thread, so please feel free to move if required.
We really would like to visit the Alps in the summer, so I'm hoping snowheads can suggest a largish resort that has plenty to do where we won't need to hire a car to get around, so with a train station?

Depends on what you want from the resort. Nice views to sit and look at. Mountains to climb. Via Ferrara. High level walking. Mountain biking. Sailing on a lake. Paragliding. Historic sights.

Chamonix, perhaps? Very busy in summer with loads going on, and you can use lifts to access a number of fantastic mountain paths (which don't need mountaineering skills, though obviously there's plenty of mountaineering available too).
Or somewhere like Wengen? More trains than you can shake a walking stick at.

kyoto49, Briancon. The whole valley is busy and served by an overnight train service from Paris as well as trains from Marseille. Climbing, walking, cycling, Tour de France (at the right time). Bus service up and down the valley.

Why not try the Jungfrau region? Plenty to see and do in the summer and VERY accessible by train
