Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Action Cameras.

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello people,

I'm looking to buy an action camera for the forthcoming winter, just got a big dilema which one to buy.

There seems to be some hype around this one http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2013/6/9/sj1000-at-lasta-good-cheap-action-camera.html

But I can't find any videos of it being used in snow or in the cold conditions of the mountains. If anyone has one or has anything to say about them then great!

I don't really want to splash out on a gopro but I really don't want to buy the other one then regret not buying a gopro.

Or would anyone recommend any other action cameras that are well... cheap i guess around the 100 pounds mark.

Thanks to anyone who can help me out!

SJ1000, didn't he have issues with the case etc? anyway techmoan is fickle, he's moved on

looks a lot like the Sony Action Cam but with a screen. Has a big sensor like the Sony and GoPros, maybe the same one? Also similar issues to the Sony with colour balance. The case looks like the Sony too, the Sony case suffers from fogging. Has a relatively high 18 m/bps bit rate which is about the same as the SJ1000 but you would have to look what kind of frames it includes: P/I/B to really know if that is good.

The Sony Action camera tops out at 25.4 m/bps but has no B frames so needs a higher bit rate for the same quality as, say, the Go Pro Black despite using the same sensor. The devil is in the detail. You see this manifest itself as blocks on dark areas in the video or anywhere with crazy detail like surfing/water sports. Maybe not so much of a problem with skiing.

I would consider a camera with 120 fps for skiing.

You really need to look at raw footage (Techmoan is good for this) as YouTube re-encodes everything with a lot of extra compression so it is hard to make comparisons.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks for your help davidof, I'm still in a muddle as to what to do though! I am guessing having 120fps makes the footage smoother right? Or is it just for slow motion shots. I think an action camera with 120fps might be out my budget range. It's frustrating that none of the cheapo camera have been tested on snow in the mountains!

No need for 120fps most movies are only shown at 24fps although going up to 60 is pretty good as you can slow the footage down doubling the framerate again means you can just slow it more without needing to interpolate frames to keep motion smooth.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I got a blackbox dashcam in HD, great unit and already paid for itself as an oncoming van decided to push too close and whacked my mirror Sad i had his actions recorded with my speed and position on the road including his number plate caught by the camera.

Funny when he stopped after hitting my mirror with his van and claimed it was all my fault, after i showed him a quick play back (which you can view on your smart phone) he changed his mind instantly and admitted fault.
