Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Recommended 2nd hand skis for intermediates?

My brother is after a pair of skis for him and his wife. He is moving to Edinburgh, so wants a pair for the odd day trip and maybe the odd week abroad.

He's skied for 3 weeks in total, can ski European blues and reds. His wife has skied a few more weeks.

Anyone got any recommended skis he could keep his eye out for on ebay, or any places that sell off 2nd hand gear or a few years old skis at good prices?

cheers,

Greg

gregh, For the odd day in Scotland it probably wouldn't matter that much, but he should look out for carving skis (hold better on ice), around nose height. Slalom skis are probably the best for Scotland as you do get a fair bit of ice and they're designed to grip on it. Also (with the exception of Nevis) most of the runs are rather narrow, so a quick turning ski is definitely an advantage.

eBay is fine and there are probably ads at every dry slope (including Hillend).

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

yeh thanks easiski, I'm very skeptical of just buying "carving" skis, I've told him to look out for B1s, XScreams, a few Dynastar models.

I've bought three pairs off ebay, and all have been fine, it's a good source if you know what to ask (year/usage/storage/servicing/sidecut) and then have a bit of a google for reviews.

There's a lot of atomic betacarves on there at the moment - they are pretty nice (I hope so anyway I just bought a pair of the C9's that replaced them) and reputed to have good edge grip - 13-17m turn radius depending on year/size so pretty nippy for the short turns...There are a couple of pairs of C8/C9s up as well, which are newer, but obviously more expenisve. Don't recommend the unnumbered 'c series' that are on there though ' I think it's a rebranded C7 - which IIRC is pretty much a 'first turns' type ski?

Good hunting!
