Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Softshell, hardshell, insulated jacket/pants - beginner skiier - definitive thread - help!!

I've just worn normal snowboarding pants, never been wet apart from one day in the rain. My top is a Gore tex mountaineering shell though, but the legs always seem to stay dry, vents are important though to prevent overheating if you are particularly energetic.

I am willing to spend quite a bit of £. Is gore-tex definitely the way to go versus other highly waterproof fabrics?

I actually thine eVent may be slightly better than Goretex these days but there's not much in it and it doesn't seem cheaper. If goretex and eVent are better than cheaper own brand fabrics then it is mainly about breathability. Frankly that's not so important for downhill skiiing (not that aerobic) but very important if you also want to use them for ski-touring or mountaineering. If you go for shell pants and you run cold then I would suggest looking at powerstretch type fleece tights - very nice on cold days.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I have a gamma mx which I have used for the past three seasons. I usually run a bit cool and wear it with a merino base and a mountain hardwear fleece jumper with no problems. I did buy a cheap lightweight down jacket to wear underneath if it got really cold this year, but found this almost too hot! I went through all this discussion 3 years ago when I was choosing the gamma mx. I think it comes down to what you like the look/idea of. I don't think there is a definitive right answer!! Not a lot of help!!

A few softshell jacket reviews. Of the softshells tested they either offered great weather protection (as per hard shells) or great breathability, but not both.
