Hi All,
I'm off to Neiderau, Austria on 21st Jan, and have skied once... 14 years ago!! So I could do with any advice or tips I can get!!! I'd love to try boarding... is it easier than skiing to pick up? Also has anyone been to Neiderau, what's the night life there like??
Cheers guys, all post's will be appreciated

welcome to snowHeads Hannah
In theory boarding is far easier (ie. less technical) than skiing. But, skiing is far easier than it was 14 years ago because of some incredible changes in the design of skis since then.

boarding involves a lot more falling over in the first week at least....so depends on how hardy you are.
My only tip after a 14 year break is get lessons!

Masque, Doesnt have to dig holes in the piste. Your chatting up of that nice young boarder chick at Castleford Xscape was a fairly impressive wipe out

As someone who started boarding at an incredibly old age (don't ask, but I won't be paying for many more prescriptions) I was advised to ski when the snow was bad, and keep boarding for the "good snow" days. It's much easier to snowboard on nice soft snow, and not so hard when you fall. It's easier to ski on soft snow too, of course, but I can already do that and even beginner skiers often fall very little. But all beginner boarders fall, because unless you "go for it" you'll never make a turn; there's no snowboarding equivalent of a snowplough turn. It's far easier when the snow is soft, even when it's too slushy to be really nice to ski on, and of course soft snow is not so painful to fall on. You could do both - many hire shops will give you a deal where you can swap from day to day. But you need lessons, either way, and that might mean opting for one or the other for the week. If you are going in a group, maybe opt for whichever you can do with at least one mate of similar ability. If you board, wear wrist guards, even if you are hard enough not to need any other body armour.

snowbunny, Can I just remind you . . . "Medium Pants"
Frosty the Snowman, just being nice, my fantasies revolve around ladies of my own generation (or thereabouts) and to be honest, I'm too busy to even care at the min.

Ok, so boarding best in soft snow.... I might keep an eye out and make my final decision when I arrive... I'll keep you all posted... I have a feeling I'll it'll be a remake of Bridget Jones!! Hahaha
Incogskisno- I'm a little gutted there's no night life... but I'm not one of these people that are scared of sitting on their own, I'll find myself a bar end, with the schnapps and I'll be happy as larey!!

happyhan, Neiderau is a family resort, so no nightclubs as AFAIK, just Karaoke and bowling etc. The hotel we stayed in had a bar not much bigger than my living room, but it was popular with the young ski instructors and we had a good laugh drinking flugels and schnapps. Please post back on here after your holiday and let us know how you got on

happyhan, there are many who say the 1st few days of boarding will involve a lot of tumbles and pain but then you will be moving around on the mountain much earlier than a beginner skier starting at the same time. Lessons, whichever way you go. And have fun.
