Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

All you need to do is buy some skins that are wide enough and long enough for your skis - all skins will have a few options on length at the very least - and cut them down to the right shape, with something like a stanley knife once you've fitted them to your skis.

^^^ this, although I find G3 tip attachments work particularly well on skis with wide rounded tips

I just bought a pair of the G3 mohair/mix skins, even on twin tips I think the standard rear clip will be fine, but I got the additional double tail clip for more security. I haven't used them in anger but they were fairly easy to trim, nice and light and seem well made. They go up to a 140mm width. Get the size right and remember that the skin material does not reach right to the back of the ski. I bought mine in the States for under £90. Careful with shipping costs though.

I read a lot of reviews and they are highly rated.

The pure synthetic version is a little longer lasting for wear, but at the expense of slightly less glide. Instead of waxing I am going to experiment on using zardoz to prevent glooping up.

Bloomin beck sounds complicated all this synthetic glooping!!!!! So I can't just get some skins put them on and go off into the hills?

I have some synthetic G3 Alpinist skins for use with DPS Wailers but I'm not that keen on them as they don't grip very well on hard-packed snow. I prefer the Coltex mohair mix skins I use for touring on some narrower skis (bought the skins from spyderjon). They grip and glide well and they're low bulk, folding down to a small size. Also had some BD Ascension skins in the past which grip really well but don't glide as well as the mixed fibre skins and they're quite stiff and bulky. I've heard using them described (accurately) as like having bits of carpet attached to the underside of your skis. However, BD's mixed fibre skins are probably a different story.

meandrew, You could do with warm waxing a nylon skin. Some do with mohair, some don't, the jury seems to be out. I'm just getting into the touring game but I was told to always carry either some soft wax, BD anti gloop or zardoz, as if the snow starts sticking to your skins due to the right moisture / temp ratio you will have great difficulty in getting around.

Avalanche Poodle, Ok I sort of get what you mean like snow bobbles on a woolly jumper that build up on the fibers so you wax them to stop this ?

Exactly. I have been trying to find out if I should wax mine, and can't find a definitive answer even with much internet searching. A lot depends on how new the skins are, what the snow conditions are like etc. I'll just keep a little puck in my pocket and rub it on if I start glooping up.

I'm hoping to test mine out on the Welsh hills soon, but failing that I'll be in Austria in early Jan, will post up how I get on. I toured 3 times last season on borrowed kit but now have put together my own set up.

Yeah no need to go mental, just carry some skin wax with you to rub on when the snow starts balling.

LOL... a lot of folk just use the softish rub on general ski wax, cheap and available in a lot of places. Zardoz seems to have a really good write up as it won't affect the glue, will wear off fairly quickly and is easily wiped over the skin.

BTW you'll only need the skin wax a couple of times a year.

G3 skins also come with an excellent skin cutting tool which might be sold separately now but is completely fool proof.

I'm totally new to touring side of things but I have always wanted to have a go,my brother has a place on loch Tay and I'm sick of going up with my downhill gear and seeing all the lovely mountains and not being able to get out on them to have a blast down but now I have my set up I can't wait.

Yup - it is brilliant. My first go I did 1000m up, took me bloody hours, but the ski down from the hut in the dark was exciting. Just on piste that time though. I fell in love with touring that day Smile Just check the avi info and don't take risks, especially if you are on your own.
