Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

PSA: Waxing Iron £23.19!

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Having recently kitted myself out with a waxing iron and the rest of the associated kit off ebay I came across a problem - the travel iron i bought didn't heat up enough, then broke.

Queue searching the internet for a decent specific waxing iron for a good price...

Surfdome are currently selling the demon waxing iron (rrp £30) for £29, but they are offering 20% off with 'TAKE20' code, and free p & p. I've just ordered one and it's come in at £23.19.
£15 more than an awful disposable travel one and half the price of toko/swix's offerings!

Thought this may be of use to a lot of you who I'm sure debate the merits of wax-specific vs. household irons (mainly choice dictated by price).

£2 (inc postage) for a small travel iron off ebay. Does exactly the same job but smaller and cheaper!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I paid £8.50 for a travel iron off ebay. It didn't heat the wax up well, lost it's heat very quickly so the process took genuinely a couple of hours, and broke when I moved onto the second set of skis.
So from my experience of ebay specials I thought I'd share an alternative.

tesco value iron for £4.97 still going strong after two years of service as a regular clothing iron, and 3 or 4 years subsequent hard labour as a waxing iron. Everyone says you shouldn't use a steam iron for waxing your stuff but I find as long as you remember not to fill it with water it's fine. Likewise everyone says it's dangerous because the iron gets too hot, and you'll burn your bases/die of inhaling fumes. I find turning the temperature dial down seems to work ok.

I've had a travel iron. I've had a waxing iron.

The waxing iron is better.

Just saying.

I didn't want to get into the ever touchy subject of irons, but just thought snowheads may appreciate the price if they don't want a household iron, drawing from my personal experience.

The only time I've tried to use a travel iron it was hopeless, it didn't get hot enough and it was thrown away without ever finishing a pair of skis. I used an old steam iron for quite some time and it did the job well, you do have to be very careful of the temperature though. When that gave up I bought a proper waxing iron and it's much better, the thermostat is far more reliable.

I can't comment on everyday irons, but I happily ironed 6 skis on Sunday with the real thing. I am a Spyderjon devotee wink
