Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Where to go mid jan?

Where to for me and GF mid jan. We like groomers, dicking about off piste in trees and gullies, not so bothered about open area off piste. We don't do noisy après or lively nightlife. We like to avoid the crowds and Russians, prefer to stay in catered chalets, and will be sticking to Europe.
We we're thinking La Rosiere, Tignes or somewhere on the Sella Ronda, but if anyones got a better idea ?????
We would like to go somewhere we haven't been so not 3vallees, L2A, Alpe d'Huex, Flaine, Milkyway or Sweden.

thecramps, welcome to Snowheads snowHead

Mid January will help avoid the main Russian weeks, and your ideas as to resorts should offer you some good options that tick lots of boxes. What kind of budget are you looking at and where do you want to fly from? Would you consider driving?

Budget about £600-£800 each, and prefer to fly from Manc, but will do LGW or LHR for a good deal. We have an ancient landrover that's very unreliable and a Fiesta with stupid runflat tyres that's totally shite in anything over 2mm of snow, so driving not really an option.

Is week starting Jan 11th a main Russian week??

thecramps, I think the main Russian week will be the week before as their main holiday is the 6th, I think

Have you considered Les Arcs. Went there a couple of years ago and there were plenty of trees and gullies and lots of piste. For that time of the year you should be able to get a catered chalet with a big Tour company from Manchester. We stayed in Arc 2000 which has a small lift link to go down to 1950 in the evening which is good to walk round.

thecramps, Do you include chalethotels within your definition of catered chalet? If so, try looking at YSE who run an excellent chalethotel - Les Chardons - in Val d'Isere that fits your budget at that time (assuming that the figure you quoted was package cost, not including ski pass etc).

Thanks chrisb, I forgot to add Arcs to list of been theres, but you are right, it is great fun there and we will be going again.
Thanks DCG for reply, but we prefer chalets over chalet hotels because we find people socialize better and we have had only two occasions when we were in a chalet with people we didn't get on with, or probably more accurately people who didn't get on with us! We're not very outgoing socially so we find it better to be forced into socializing round a dinner table.

DCG, figure quoted is package without lift passes. We have our own gear so hire isn't an issue. Got to add though that for £800 we would be expecting perfection, ski in/ski out, gallons of free wine, deserted pistes and a short transfer .

There have been several favourable reports on here about this place in the Dolomites.

Serre Chevalier may be an option, though perhaps you're after somewhere further away from LDA and AdH. From the criteria above, it should meet the need.

thecramps, the 3 Valleys is great if you go after the Russians (2nd week in Jan), have a look at options in La Tania and Mottaret. The Grand Massif is great as well and would suit you perfectly - you might get more value for your money there. It is also just over an hour from Geneva so short/cheap transfers. Have a look at Les Carroz as well as Flaine, it is prettier and it has a really nice atmosphere.

Also the Portes du Soleil is worth considering. You could stay near the Prodains cable car in Morzine and be in the Avoriaz bowl in no time. http://www.skiology.co.uk has some cracking chalets there.

If you are considering Les Arcs have a look at http://www.whitechaletslesarcs.com - some friends stayed at Chalet Sterwen and absolutely loved it.

Just a few ideas... Very Happy

thecramps, If there's only two of you going and you're looking for a room in a catered chalet mid Jan then I would suggest waiting until v last minute and you might get a real bargain - taking the last room in a chalet. There's plenty of resorts that would fit your criteria and you would also have the benefit of seeing what local conditions are like.

We're going somewhere w/b 6th January. Not considered the Russian holiday season before - where do they tend to go?
Options we're looking at:

Morzine
La Rosiere
Tignes
Possibly somewhere in Austria

NeilMeredith, They're like us - they go all over the place with perhaps a taste for 'name' resorts in Switzerland and France.

Nothing to worry about - the odd one has a beer for breakfast, the guys are all Spyder clad and discuss munitions in the gondola but that's it.
