good grief but having met a number of American women . . . thankfully platonically(sp?) . . . SO MANY of them are complete nutters.

under a new name, they like anything different. A lot is down to so many American men being self obsessed, self absorbed, ѕhіtheads . . . I STRONGLY add that not all US men are that bad but you have no idea how many are.

American condoms are a bit different from those in the UK, but they work just as well in the right hands.

I don't think a condom in the right hand (or even on it) would be too successful as a means of avoiding pregnancy. I could be wrong tho'

There are nutters in every country. This woman certainly sounds like one. The blog is well written and quietly impressive - assuming it's a good idea to take any such publication at face value.

miranda, It has LOTS of history as long as you're not white; Masses of culture to draw from and distil into an all-pervading subculture of fear, loathing, lies, self entitlement and selfishness . . . but as long as you shop locally you can get some really great fruit cakes

Wow.....it's never a good idea to paint with such a broad brush. I'm American, and soon to be British (dual citizenship). I'll be the first to admit that there are some fairly mental aspects of U.S. culture (guns, the Tea Party, etc, etc), but that could be said of anywhere. Lumping an entire nation together is just narrow minded, and foolish.

While I know nothing in detail about this story, as a family lawyer here in England, I can comfortably state there are just as many nutters here too who operate in very similar ways. I would never judge a case based on self serving internet blogs by anyone (and definitely not if they feature in the Daily Mail) but "Sara" does sound at the nuttier end of the spectrum!

boofit, yes, I know lots of very "normal" Americans, just as I do quite a lot of fruit cake Brits. Yours is a nation of greater extremes though.
As for Mr Miller, anyone close to the white circus will have stories about him and his motorhome. Whether all folklore or not is another matter.

Masque, whether you call yourself American or not makes no difference - it doesn't make it any less lazy to make generalisations about 300+ million people. I've also lived there and travelled extensively - I have my opinion, you have yours.

miranda, So how do you explain the political system, the 80% of the country that is at or below the poverty line, the rampant gun deaths, the millions in jail and the huge number in life sentences for non-violent crimes. The pollution, the terrible food, the overt racism, the overt gay bashing . . . the sheer f*n' ignorance of the average joe. Start with those and we can move on to some more. Call me lazy and you need to prove it, I'm perfectly happy to debate you at whatever length you like.
I was going to include Justin Beiber, but remembered the little twot was Canadian

Masque, one thing is for sure. You are not lazy and your views will be very valid as you travel so much through America. much of what you say will bevtrue because you have seen it. most here on the forum will not have met you so have no idea how hard you will argue the point

We can all speak from our own individual experiences, it doesn't make wild generalisations any more valid. Poverty, pollution, poor conditions in prisons (and mental hospitals), inappropriate sentencing for crimes, racism, gay-bashing and rank ignorance are all things which I have encountered in the UK. I'm sure that all these things are more prevalent in the US - it's a bigger country. I think we're all agreed that the gun laws in the US are crap, though.

You don't need to have met Masque to know just how hard he'll go at someone on this forum in arguing his point, which is a bit of shame actually as I'd like to ask more about the 80% of Americans living "at or below the poverty line", but I'm not here to have an argument so it kills the discussion.

chrisb, The veneer of civilisation has become almost transparent here once you stop being a tourist and from what I read here and following the (many) news sources I reference, the UK is slowly moving in a similar direction. Though the size and density of the the UK population is a natural inhibition to this. People have to understand that the USA has only aprox 5x the UK population. For the most part the towns and cities are small, relatively isolated, add the State level bureaucracy and isolationist attitude and you begin to understand the 'Dissunited' nature of America. For near 20 years it's been evolving an economic system that has systematically(sic) destroyed the middle class and created a population that is not just easily manipulated but is rampantly xenophobic of anything that represents ANY possible threat. The election of a black President did little to change that as National Government has little to do with or control over global commerce (our real lord and master) What it did do was to add a new dimension to the paranoia pervading this society.

miranda, You have Google, I'm sure you are more than capable of doing some research.
"Have a go at". Well, if you're not prepared to defend a stated position then why do you think I should not have a go. All you've done is make a statement and now say you are unwilling to argue the point 'cos I might be mean to you.
That's not going to endear me to your POV is it?

when I lived in America for a year I can honestly say I met hundreds of wonderful people and not much filled me with horror. We (myself and two friends) were welcomed with open arms by so many - joining families for Thanksgiving, donated items for our home, help moving into a home from people we had only just met, cookies from neighbours when we moved in (I travelled to MANY different States and met lovely people in them all) etc I remain in contact with some with the help of facebook and frankly they put me to shame with their outdoor living - young kids doing fun runs, teacher friend at camp etc I worked for Marriott Hotels while I was there and met a whole chocolate box assortment of folks - and basically we all had a good time together, be we man, woman, black, white, gay or straight. The thing I found most weird was the 20-somethings that didnt go out drinking on a Saturday night as they wanted to go to Church on a Sunday

Shimmy Alcott, I agree, there are many amazing people here . . . so why aren't they represented as what America is? It's like meeting the three philanthropist Atlanta ladies in the Ameristar Casino KC,MO on the night that the Trayvon Martin verdict was announced. The first comment I heard was "Good, the N' got what he deserved" This was from a woman who was there on a Church assembly to raise funds for overseas missions.
What I have experienced is amazing charity to those they deem worthy of charity. There is little if any agreement on any human right that does not apply to themselves or those they can identify with. The fragmentation of America is live and accelerating.

I'm afraid to say that imho the world would be a much better place without America - or more accurately white Republican Americans and all the associate lunacy that goes with their politics, church associations, gun lobby and loud, boorish behaviour.
Beautiful, awe inspiring country spoiled by an above average ratio of loons but with very many amazing people too whether sportspeople, musicians, authors, poets that are undermined by the war-mongering, redneck fruit loops.
I'd still love to go there and btw Jesse Jackson is still quite the nicest, most enigmatic American I have ever met and has made me one handshake from most of America's history.
