Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

SWIX and TOKO Hand Edge Tools which number goes against the base

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Anyone know when you use a SWIX or TOKO edge tool how you tell which angle you are using, should the number on the tool face the ski base or should it be visible.

Thanks advance.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Have you two thought about this carefully?

radar, thanks but I'm talking about the handy pocket tool, this has got 89 and 88 on it.

the file part goes against the side edge, the other part goes agains the base. have you got the skis out to use it as it then becomes more obvious.

radar, Very Happy Yeah, I know.

I know how the tool sit against the ski edge and abse, but there are two sides to the tool.

One for 89 and then another for 88.

If I want to use the 89 does that number sit against the base of the ski, or should the 88 sit agianst the ski base ?

There seems to be some suggestion in a Swix video I saw that the number should sit against the base, but I'm asking because it is not clear, and there is nothing on the packaging or else where to clarify this.

bruisedskier, FWIW I don't have the answer, but from just your description above I perceive the problem - there are two edges to the tool one will an 88 edge and the other the 89 - it would seem to me that you want to know how to work out which way round you need to hold it in order to apply the correct angle to the ski edge, i.e to get the 88 rather than the 89 - yes? - from what you say I can see the potential problem even if the others can't. wink

bruisedskier,

I've got a cheapo version that is similar, and the number of the desired angle goes against the ski base. I don't use it any more as I have bought some decent file guides.

musher, Great, that was what I suspected, but thought the Snowheads great and good would put me right.

Thought I got off relatively lightly in terms of the ribbing about this wink

bruisedskier,

It's a bit easier to tell with my cheapo version. It's 88 & 90 so you can actually see the difference.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Assuming you've already used the guide on the skis just put some black marker pen on the edge then see which angle takes it off fully across the width.

If you've got a choice of either 89 or 88 degrees then go with the 88 for better ice/hard snow grip. If you've got Whitedot, Fischer or Atomic skis then you need an 87 guide otherwise you'll be potentially loosing grip but you'll also loose material/life from your edge when you reduce the angle.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Sorry, I didn't realise it had a variable angle rolling eyes

I have discovered that ski edging tools are also handy for chainsaw maintenance.
