Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Boots........wierd foot issue!! Please help!

All- I am looking for your helpful suggestions on what I should do about my problematic Salomon boots that Ive only skiied with on 2 separate holidays-only affecting the right foot.

Ive skiied for over 20 years and never experienced this problem with ski boots before!

During a week of skiing with them in SwitzerlandI noticed I couldnt feel my big toe on my right foot & after checking- it wasnt due to cold, I just could hardly feel anything as I must have compressed a nerve. It was numb/tingly when touched. During the week the problem also occurred on the top of my foot running from my toe to bottom of my shin. The left foot was perfectly comfortable and unaffected. I saw a physio for my stiff back in the weeks after the ski hol & he had a look at my leg/foot & just gave it a good massage. All I could feel for weeks when I touched my foot was a pins and needles/numb sensation until about 4 months later I noticed full sensation came back.

Fast forward to 2 years later when I went sking in France.......stupidly with the same boots. Same thing happened - couldnt feel my toe after the first day, same on top of foot but worse & also strange sensation on front of shin. Couldnt bear for anyone to touch affected toe and foot due to very wierd pins & needles/numb sensation. It was really upsetting- went to see different physio who basically said pinched nerve, cant do anything to treat it. 6 months later normal again in foot/leg but toe not perfect.

Now, this year I obviously need to go visit one of the specialists in Bicester or London. DO I SCRAP THE SALOMONS and get them to do me the full new ski boot choosing/customisation process. Or do I take the evil Salomons (which include custom fitted foot beds from my original purchase) and ask them to help adapt them somehow?

How can I tell that by buying a new 'specially fitted' pair that will fix the issue, I could end up with spending £500 and being back to square one again? Im scared that every ski hol I go on now will result in the uncomforable numbness & empty wallet

Ive already had a free 20 min session ad Profeet Fulham and they stuck some foam at the bottom of each foot- all that did was make the boots incredibly tight and impossible to wear after 20 mins at Hemel so Ive ripped that off!

From what I can tell there is nothing remarkable about my right foot in terms of shape/instep etc. My left has a bunion but that one isn experiencing any problems.

mildy, it might sound daft, but I sometimes have problems if I accidentally over-tighten mine - is it possible that, on the occasions it happened, you could have done this?

I previously made the mistake of buying boots that were too small and quite possibly the wrong shape for my feet (also Salomon). Result was numb feet, bruising and toenail loss, much worse on one foot than the other. I was assured the liners would 'pack down' and the boots would fit better but after three years that hadn't happened and I gave up, saw a bootfitter in resort and bought bigger boots (Atomic). No problems since.

mildy, I'd suggest taking yourself and the offending boots to see Colin in Bicester, and then take it from there.

I would also suggest Colin in Bicester (solutions for feet). He saw my wife who has had ongoing problems getting boots that don't reduce her to tears. Her feet (both) would quickly go numb and she'd need to get the boots off ASAP. She has very high arches/instep and very limited ankle flex, other boots seemed to press on her forefoot and squish nerves. Colin refered my wife to James at Outdoor Traders where she was measured and fitted with Daleboots.......problem solved. I'm not saying you need Daleboots but seeing Colin or James would be a good start. I wouldn't trust to luck and strap on the Salomons until you know whats going on.

Hi guys,
Thanks for your suggestions........I will definitely try and make the journey to Bicester. The people I saw in London weren't so helpful Madeye-Smiley

mildy, I had the same problem in a pair of Langes in the mid nineties. I think they were a bit too big once the liners bedded in, so had to crank them down super tight to stop them flapping about. I also have a couple of big knobbles (are they called bone spurs?) on the top of my foot over the arch which doesn't help I suspect. The solution for me? Snowboarding Laughing Laughing Laughing . (oddly true, but entirely coincidental and not the actual reason I took to the darkside).
