Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Easter Skiing

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi - we are 2 families of 4 and are looking for some reliable Easter skiing this year. We usually ski in the first week of March and this will be the first time we have ventured onto snow this late in the season. The older children (9, 7, 7) have only skied twice and some are still a little nervous, we also have a little one of 3 who will be on skis for the first time.
We are looking for a resort with reliable snow, good childcare and reasonably easy transfers. We would also like self-catered.
We have looked at Are, but it looks a bit of a headache to get to, Hemsedal in Norway and are also looking at Saas Fee, we have never skied in any of these areas, usually ski in France ... we are open to any ideas.

Any advice on the above resorts or any fresh ideas will be gratefully received.

Thanks.

Actually Easter? The week 19-26 April? Many resorts close around then and you certainly want somewhere snow sure (and therefore probably further North or high - with the proviso that further East in Europe the snow line is usually lower.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

No sorry that wasn't clear, it'll be the week of the 5th April ... for a week.

crimpy999, Have skied in Les Arcs for last 4 years, latest being w/c 9th April. Has always been plenty of snow to ski on. There are different areas of Les Arcs but think it ticks all the boxes.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Oh no problem then. However for late April or early May see best-ski-resorts-late-season. And for real late season Val d'Isere / Tignes up the valley is better than Les Arcs.

If you want self-catered then you'll have plenty of options in Austria. Have skied in Solden and Stubai at that time of year and haven't been dissappointed by the quantity or quality of the snow.

So not Easter then, but early April. With the normal caveats about weather varying from year to year, we have had good skiing in every resort we have visited at that time. The list includes:

Courchevel 1350
St. Martin de Bellville
Les Menuires (though the sun can be really fierce at that time of year)
Les Arcs (lots of times)
La Plagne (the daytime temps were getting up to 20 degrees but it froze solid over night and the snow melted at a very slow rate)
Val d-Isere and Tignes (good to mid May)
Kitzbuel (though here the snow was really poor)
Solden (even able to ski down to the valley bottom)
Verbier
Zermatt
Whistler
Banff (most of the resort was closed and the buses to Lake Louise and Sunshine were very unreliable and infrequent)

You should be able to get a good weeks skiing if you choose a good high resort
