Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Chambery, Car Hire & Snow Chains

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All

Flying into Chambery this half term (feb 22) and will be hiring a car to drive to Montgenevre via Frejus.

It seems that most of the care hire websites don't allow you to book snow chains when you make the booking, so I was wondering what happens? I think I've read somewhere that it's law in France to have snow chains, so how does this work? Do they have to include them with the car or will i have to pay extra?

If I have to pay for them and can't pre book, will there be enough sets available?

Also, having never used them before I'd guess it's worth having a practice before we actually get up the mountain?

Many Thanks

Odd. I've never had any trouble requesting chains on a website (small print often says it is a request and they are not guaranteed). They have always been an cost extra and are not included in the basic rate, I think I've ended up paying for them at the airport usually.

I've just had a look on holiday autos, they allow you to request chains, I suggest you email the company you're using and clarify, but they'll have them. Will the run out? Maybe, but I've never known it.

Beware holidayautos. Last week they tried to charge us 165 euros to hire chains for 10 days.

I'd recommend having a practice first. Better to know what you're doing if you need them.

Find a supermarket and buy 'em is the cheapest solution. And if you're really cheeky, do it on a credit card and take them back if you don't need 'em.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Could you not get a ride on a massive spice eating worm?

And do away with the car altogether? NehNeh

mauddib, there are some useful YouTube videos to give you an initial idea of what to do. Yes, certainly worth practising in easy conditions if the forecast is snowy.

Filthyphil30k, technical point, the worms don't eat the spice, they make the spice.
