Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Boot fitter up north

The 'boot fitter' at Backcountry who I spoke to said that no boot with a walk mode should have a heel gap of less than 30mm when doing a shell fit!

This is complete opposite of my own experience at BCUK ... they made sure that the gap between the heel of my foot and rear of the shells was NO MORE THAN 20mm. .

The bloke I spoke to (last year) held up a Scarpa fitting stick (14mm x 30mm) and said that when fitting any boot with a walk mode it was important to be able to fit the wide axis of the stick into the heel gap when doing a shell fit. He went on to say that he used the smaller axis to check the gap when fitting boots without a walk mode.

Markymark29 says above that he and his wife walked out the shop because BCUK were trying to sell him a pair of boots which were too big.

I'm genuinely pleased to hear that they sold you a pair of boots that fit. Maybe they have good staff and bad staff?

Another one for Graham at Rivington Alpine - but phone and book an appointment in advance as the fitting takes about 3 hours, but well worth the time!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Looks as though there's a consensus here and I might sound a little partial, but the guys at our Castleford Xscape store are well worth speaking to - ask for Eddie, he's an absolute pro! http://www.ellis-brigham.com/stores/castleford-leeds Very Happy

Lol, seriously this level of self promotion must be close to ban-worthy.

OP not that close to you but since they were mentioned I would avoid Lockwoods. It may depend on who you get but I got 'you don't need a custom footbed the stock atomic one is fine' and they were content with filling the boot up with bontax. The shell fit was decent though and CEM sorted it out in the end.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Andy at Backcountry fitted my boots and they're an absolute revelation. I've never bern able to do a full day without ending up with buckles undone on lifts etc - Andy fitted my boots, which took about three hours, custom footbeds etc and now I happily wear them all day with no issues. They have a walk mode and Andy was keen to ensure the gap was the right size when fitting the shell - certainly wasn't in excess of 30mm!

Highly recommended.

I don't have a great deal of experience in getting boots fitted, only having had to buy two pairs over almost 20 years. I bought my second pair in Perth, in a place called Craigdon Sports.

I made an appointment there last year to see Karla on CEM's advice and was very happy with the service and, having skied 4 and a bit weeks in the boots, am very pleased with them too. So much so I woke up recently in a cold sweat from a nightmare in which I'd broken them
