Any comments on this course guys?
Im wondering if im up to it. I basically can snowboard down any piste. Last year in Mayerhofen, was my first real taste of off piste and i sucked at it, but i had no problems on any of the pistes.
It looks great though...
Anyone any comments?

jicjoc, the course details say that it is for "expert" level and that "your experience enables you to read the terrain well and adapt your technique to all situations : steep runs, moguls, change of snow type, off-piste".
It doesn't sound like a course for off-piste beginner, frankly. I am doing a course for off piste beginners in January - but it's a skiing one.
From reports here on snowheads the standard on the high level UCPA courses can be very high indeed.
That same week there is a course at "advanced" level in Argentiere which might suit you better. The SC looks like it's taking confirmed off-piste skiers on some classic excursions in the area. The Argentiere one would probably have more instruction.

You'll need to Register first of course.

jicjoc, UCPA wouldn't run the course somewhere unsuitable.

jicjoc, Serre Chevalier is great for off-piste. snowHeads has had an off=piste bash there in March for the last 3 years. Skiers and Snowboarders welcome. Instruction is available too so ideal for anyone wnating to develop off-piste skills.

Hmm - I don't know anyone that can snowboard that didn't pick up "off piste" skills pretty instantaneously. Are you sure you can really piste ride properly (foot steering, no back leg kick) and are a) riding a long enough board b) are able to adjust fore aft balance? Off piste improvement can be as simple as setting your rear binding back a hole.
Argentierre is pretty much perfect terrain for learning aside from the ball- aching drag over to the back at Le Tour.

I would say do a beginners off-piste course first. The SC UCPA is a tough course, I went on the Flaine one which is at a lower level and I struggled on some days. My off-piste boarding is not bad and Ive been boarding off-piste pretty much since i started. Argentierre is a great place and we went over to Les Houches on a pow day and it was uneffing-believable. Waist deep pow in most parts and even on the pistes it was above the knees! this was on the confirme course with UCPA Chamonix, not strictly off-piste but because there was so much snow we done 3 days just off-piste/ pow riding.

Word. I would be serously unimpressed if a guy tuned up on the SC grand traces week with NO off piste experience. It is for those that can already ride off piste and want to do some more interesting stuff which is why it is L5 only, not L4 and 5 like many of the other off piste weeks.
jicjoc, looks like you have already decided to go for one of the more suitable courses. I don't think the insurnace is good value - you should be able to get a weeks cover for 'off-piste with a guide' for <£30.
You get to Argentierre by a transfer bus which is like £50 return. Loads and loads of transfer companies.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

http://www.alpybus.com/home do good shared transfers. The Chamonix one goes to Argentierre too. If you get a late evening Easyjet flight out of Geneva on your last day you can ski almost the whole day.
