1) It's the one family holiday where everyone is active and happy
2) Best fun you can have with your knickers on
3) Mountains are always a lovely place to be, made lovelier with the addition of snow
4) I got tired of going ice climbing once a year to Scotland only to find no ice
5) Loads of fun with like minded friends
6) I don't like hot weather or sitting on beaches

Why do I ski, nowadays because the family love it! I love doing things with my family that they love doing.
For a while it was about educating our children, the skiing and the culture/language of different countries.
Health issues (and the passing of the years) mean I no longer want to ski all day and get down the steepest most difficult run that I can! `Though I well remember that feeling, the exhilaration, the sheer joy of being at one with nature when its going right, amongst beauty, challenging yourself and finishing the day in a state of total exhaustion yet thoroughly happy about it!
These days its about being in beautiful scenery with the family, yet experiencing the total solitude you find on occasions in the mountains, and relaxing over dinner in the evenings with a glass or two of wine.

''Powder snow skiing is not fun. It is life, fully lived, life lived in a blaze of reality. What we experience in powder is the original human self, which lies deeply inside each of us, still undamaged in spite of what our present culture tries to do to us. Once experienced, this kind of living is recognized as the only way to live — fully aware of the earth and the sky and the gods and you, the mortal, playing among them''.
Dolores La Chappelle
I have always thought this just about sums it all up..........

skiing means never having to shave your legs.
And it feels so great when, after being scared/exhilarated/frozen/in pain/exhausted you finally get to strip off just a layer or two of those clothes and have a cup of tea or a glass of beer.

I ski to feel at 1 with my environment where my peripheral and subconscious are in overdrive whilst my state of mind is relaxed with my iPod in. Nothing beats that feeling of skiing hard where your legs are about to expolode and you reach the bottom and think YES let's try that again, the atmosphere is amazing the apres is awesome and quite frankly as a package it can not be beaten.
I have been to Austria, Switzerland, France Italy and to name resorts would take too long but to name a few, Val disere, verbier, saalbach and madona now at 27 people would say I would have to be a banker or serious business man to visit these places . . . . . . nope just a mere gardener who loves to ski!!!!
You can keep Benidorm, Marbella, oludinez and Tenerife and I'll stick to doing what I know best . . . . . . skiing in the great outdoors!

What about the mediocre outdoors, or the frankly disappointing outdoors? Are there no ski resorts there?

And, of course, 13 lagers and half a dozen home-made schnapps from a man with an absurdly long beard

No, anywhere with skiable mountains and snow is great - but there are degrees of great.

Starting at 20 after a totally unsporty youth, skiing open a whole new window on life for me. Like others, I love the snow and the mountains, and the challenges (sometimes). Seeing the new snow starts my blood tingling. Skiing with friends is even more fun. I have become addicted

Good question!
I'm allowed to wear more clashing colours than is strictly legal for a hetrosexual man and so look like a peacock having a really bad fit..and everyone thinks it's normal. It helps me deal with my latent transvestite tendencies in an appropriate manner.
Then there's all that weightless, zenned-out, mountain spirit, pointy-headed hippie sh*t that's already been mentioned. It gets me Every. Single. Fkn. Time. Without fail. If I can link 10 to 20 pretty good, relaxed turns together in deep powder then everything just starts to hum.
And I believe (with absolutely no evidence) that the beginner on their second day putting four snow plough turns in one after the other is running the same sort of adrenaline thrill level as some gnarly dude dropping cliffs in the back country and that has to be some sort of democracy in action.

This, I am pretty unsporty and unco-ordinated, no balance, poo-poo reactions but pretty quickly after starting skiing I felt great, I felt like I was swooshing down the mountain, of course video evidence soon proved the contrary but I think I'm almost at the point where my skiing now looks like it felt about 6 years ago
I mountain bike as well but it is much, much harder for me to get that effortless feeling that I get from skiing (and had way before I had any skill at skiing)

Because it is a feeling unlike any other you could ever experience, and provides an excellent contrast to my incessant rock climbing addiction. Flying down the slopes on powder snow under a clear blue sky is one of the easiest ways to enter a state of flow that I have ever come across.
And because I've promised myself that I'll never, ever do anything that I don't enjoy, and skiing makes me happy, which is what counts in the end

One reason. Lunch. There is nothing more rewarding than spending a morning doing a bit of exercise and having fun with a few mates and then sitting on a terrace eating a nice lunch composed of carbohydrates and cheese. Skiing resorts seem to specialise in this type of lunch, and it is so cheap and easy to go skiing now that access to that kind of lunch is easier than ever before

I ski (or more recently try to snowboard) because of the moments when you are going like a bat out of hell, capable of putting in turns, but not quite sure if you could stop, so you press on, focussed just on staying alive..and finally getting to the bottom and one of your mates says "you went down that rapidly" and you brush it off saying "easy game", secretly just thanking god you got down alive whilst simultaneously joining the lift que to do it again.

It's a means of getting from one chairlift to another, my real passion in life
....but seriously it is all or most of the posts above. It gives me a thrill to be in the most beautiful scenery on the planet, an adrenaline buzz only matched by my football team scoring a last minute winner in an important game, I'm constantly learning and challenging myself to ski more difficult slopes and lines, keeps me fit, and it is what helps get me through the daily Monday to Friday grind during the winter....I can't wait for the weekends even more now than ever since I moved to a place with the Alps in view from my office and lounge window.

Why do I ski?
Because sailing is not so much fun in the winter.
Because I like mountains but I'm past it to be a mountaineer.
Because I have friends who like to go skiing.
