Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

10.00 on Fri 11th Oct. Saalbach. Chucking it down here, with 10-15 cm in the valley, so probably minimum 30-40 cm on the mountain. Very Happy Radio reporting lots of trees down in Salzburgerland and some villages without electricity.

Was going to clear the car off, but neighbour says the sun will come out this afternoon and it will all be gone by tonight rolling eyes

Gnarbeque, Thanks Little Angel I may go, but the glaciers will be rammed this weekend with various planned events plus the wannabe powder hounds. I may wait until middle of next week instead when it will be quieter. Plus may not be in a good way tomorrow morning as my best friend is coming over tonight to make sure I'm not lonely on my birthday (and she knows I have some good single malts in my private bar wink ) Big party was postponed due to a death in the family yesterday. Sad

Sölden well prepared for ski world cup

Just two weeks before the Ski World Cup series is due to start the Austrian ski resort of Sölden in Tirol is well prepared.

The Ötztal has around 70 cm of new snow which was confirmed by the ski federation FIS.

Isidor Grüner said: "Here in Sölen it is like the middle of winter. The conditions are looking good. We couldn't hope for better conditions. It was more a coffee drinking session than a snow inspection. Nothing can go wrong now. Not even two days of none stop rain would be a problem.

Snow form snow machines is being mixed with real snow to keep the piste in good condition. 17 snow canons are being used to make the snow.

Group training in Sölden is due to start tomorrow (Tuesday) through to Saturday.

The WM in Sölden takes place on the weekend 67th and 27th of October 2013.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them,
Volleyed and thunder'd;
...
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and ski:
Into the valley of Life
Skied the six hundred.

The lifts opened for the season today in Leogang and, although I'm not sure that there were six hundred on the slopes, the cannons were certainly thundering, at least in the morning. The weather was great up till lunchtime. After lunch it clouded over. Here's a view looking up to the Asitz from the top of the Asitzbahn gondola, with the Alte Schmiede on the right (I had lunch there) and the Asitzbräu on the left (not open today).

The pistes were in great condition, though mostly hard (sometimes a bit rough) except were the cannons had pumped out new snow. Off-piste I still found difficult, heavyish and a little crusty in places. This photo was taken from the Sportbahn Asitzkogel 2000 chairlift...

The link over to Saalbach wasn't open but it should be there from next Friday, 6th December - here the top of the Poltenbahn chairlift that brings you back and the Saalbach lifts, the Schönleitenbahn, in the distance...

There were more lifts open in Saalbach-Hinterglemm than in Leogang, I think, but I still enjoyed an excellent day with plenty skiing in Leogang, until the sun started to set over the Asitz...

With the great weather continuing, Chris_n and I met up today to answer Kitzbühel's call. The photo is of a new photopoint which has been installed at the top of the Steinbergkogel. The pistes were very quiet and also mostly hard but generally fine for skiing (with only occasional glossy spots below some snow cannons). It was also very warm out of the shade.

Another novelty we saw was the Starthaus magic carpet at the top of the Hahnenkamm gondola. Just the thing for those of us too lazy to pole 50 metres on the flat Laughing

There were still only a limited number of lifts in operation, though I think most of the area will be opening this coming weekend. We skied mostly round the Steinbergkogel circus but also had one run down the Familien-Streif piste to Kitzbühel. The Ochsalm chairlift was also running and we had lunch at the Ochsalm, which I found expensive (relative to the other areas I skied in the past few days - Kitz ruft, the skiers pay). However, the view over to the SkiWelt was great.

At the end of the day we skied down the Maierl pistes, back to the Fleckalmbahn. Although the run wasn't offically open yet, it had been pisted and all was fine - until we reached the turn off for the Fleckalmbahn just above Kirchberg. The last section hadn't been pisted so we had a rather bumpy bit to finish on (actually, the snow alongside the part the piste-bashers had churned up was good to ski). Down at the bottom a piste-basher was preparing the section before the road crossing but we squeezed through without being engulfed in snow.

Another excellent day and tomorrow should be sunny too - probably my Christmas cards will have to wait longer!
