Poster: A snowHead
|
We've taken a bit of a punt and booked to go self-catering (Hammeau des Rennes - complete with dishwasher ) to Vars at Half Term.
Research suggested that queues wouldn't be too bad and that we will not have our beauty sleep disturbed by rowdies at chucking out time.
Any positive reviews would be much appreciated. Not interested in bad ones as the die is cast and we'll find out when we get there!
Thanks.

Did a season there years ago. Great place - small and friendly, quiet pistes, lots of good skiing.

I went to Risoul last year and skied a little in Vars. Pistes were quiet even at half term (but before FR half term). Small resort, but lots of skiing, as Lizzard said. queues were v short last year. Lots of drag lifts in Risoul, but these can be avoided if you plan your route.

Skied in both Vars and Risoul a few times aeons ago - loved the area and the people. Very quiet but great skiing and enough places to go out and enjoy some apres without breaking the bank as well. I took groups to both areas and ent on my own a few times as well. Always had fantastic snow as well.

Skied Risoul several years ago and went over to Vars. not too busy even peak weeks, good skiing and friendly. Not a huge amount of nightlife but sure you'll have a good week. We've often commented we'd like to go back

Uncrowded, even at peak times. Reasonable amount of skiing when you add on Risoul. Nice sense of travel. Village itself is very French, not many English tourists. Quiet at night, but there are a few restaurants and bars. No restaurants up the mountain really, most at the foot of lifts. The area is quite pretty, lots of woodland, a few craggy peaks.
Skiing wise, not sure on what you're looking for but there are bits to suit all levels.
For beginners, there is a little slope and lift under the main gondola, and a nice run to progress to 'adroit'.
Intermmediates, pretty much everywhere is good fun. Peynier is best in the afternoon after the sun has softened it up, lots of moderately long tree runs. Escondus lift served area has short runs but good for a fast blast between the trees, with a jib park near the bottom (or used to be). The main face of Crevoux has a number of cruisy blues and an excellent snow park, served by drags. The run 'corniche' right on top of the ridge is easy but has stunning views. La Mayt peak has some good runs, the most satisfying being the top half of Olympique (superior), but beware that the Mayt chair is slow and exposed so wrap up warm for that one! The open back bowl between Vars and Risoul, served by the Clos Chardon chair is full of rolling hills and gullies, and is great fun when the snow is good. Good off piste potential too.
On the Risoul side, the runs from Razis are entertaining and reasonably long with each fork leading to a slightly different run, some small sections of which do become mogulled. Peyrefolle runs have good views and runs for all abilities, but these runs are a bit shorter. The L'Homme peak tends to be even quieter in terms of people, but the top can feel exposed in poor conditions, although its not long before you drop below the tree line.
I'm sure you will have a great time!
