Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

How long is your Piste

A German cartographer claims the figures published by many resorts are inaccurate. In some cases they claim more than double the length of pistes. It has caused some sharp reaction and investigations have been launched. PlanetSKI reports.

Some resorts do not dispute the discrepancies but argue that skiers and snowboarders do not come down the slopes in a straight line. Rather they make turns and zig-zag so the figure represents the true distance they travel on the slopes.

So there you go, it's OUR fault for straight-lining!
Nice find peteski, though you may want to take the word [/spoiler] off the url

Interesting. I think it was always pretty obvious some resort exaggerate a lot.

Dunno that total length of piste is all that significant for many folks? You can make up your actual distance skied simply by repeating runs - even on an overstated piste or two.
Personally I'd look more at the numbers and types of lifts when assessing a resort. And is it Ski-In / Ski-Out or a mystery bus tour to a huge gondola in the bottom of a valley below the snow line most of the time?

I don't mind smaller resorts and repeating runs etc. But some resorts seem much less than advertised, simply by comparing to others with similar total.

I felt those were well exaggerated: Les Deux Alpes, Obertauern, Livigno.
While those felt big enough to claim what they claim: Schladming, Saalbach, Serre Chevalier.

Looks like some resort already took action:
Stubei glacier in Austria gone from around 110 km to modest 62km (in fact only 40km are pistes - the rest freeride routes). What a change!

or Grossglockner Resort in Austria, again from 110km to 37km Wink http://www.bergfex.com/kals-grossglockner/

Sorry folks removed the spoiler. This is where the yanks are cunning as they give there ski area's in hectares, So you never know how many km of pistes they got. But in there favour You can ski the whole mountian as long as it's in bounds if I'm correct.

I'm sure the powers that be in Courmayeur are wildly optimistic when they claim 100km of piste. I think it's more like 40km, admittedly very good quality pistes, but easily covered in a day.

There are lots of ways a ski resort can exaggerate the total piste length without resorting to the outright fibs mentioned in the Where to Ski and Snowboard article. These include putting a snow fence down the middle of the piste and calling it two separate pistes, or even forgetting the fence and just pisting two separate runs down the same slope, marking every little variation as a separate piste, eg piste A goes left around this tree, piste B goes right and of course that long winding run to the valley floor that is actually never open (many years ago Les Arcs used to have 2 marked on the piste map).

And why do they give the horizontal distance and not the total altitude change? For example one resort may have x,000m of total piste vertical whereas another resort may have y,000m. I may prefer the larger even if the horizontal distance is less.

Personally I find looking at the piste map gives the best impression of a resort.

Personally I quite enjoy grommed pistes. I agree with johnE - looking at the piste maps gives the best impression. Everybody knows that length isn't everything. Width is very important too, especially for the less experienced.

Well this "WE" wants it groomed to perfection, unless it is fresh snow and then it can be groomed while I'm feeding my face at lunchtime.

I've always thought some of those figures were surprisingly high. However I am particularly shocked that Verbier claim 120% more slope than they have. However, could it be that they (reasonably) include the itineraries and the report doesn't?
