Poster: A snowHead

I am presently looking at a few skis listed on ebay by Ski-Barn. The skis are ex-rental and apart from the top sheet and bindings (which I will be replacing) look in good condition overall.
This is probably an obvious question but is it a complete no-no to buy ex-rental skis?

If you are at the shop and can examine them closely then why not.
If it is over t'internet I'd say no. I bought a pair of slightly specialist slalom skis that way from a rental shop
"hardly used over four weeks" "lightly serviced" etc
They had been ground down to a rizla papers worth of base ion one ski and the shop basically said "tough" when I complained.
Lucky I only use them infrequently and with very careful self servicing and patching they are still (just) ok.
I was really p!ssed off and would not do so again.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I would be buying over the internet and would only be able to view the pictures online from which the skis look ok but that said, it is impossible to tell how much base has been ground off.

rungsp, Distance selling laws in the UK mean you can always send them back for a refund. thedavman, Not sure about Ireland, but very cautious about ex-hire stuff generally.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Personally I would never buy an ex-rental. Yes, they will have been well serviced by the shop. But by definition the shop needs to get their moneys worth out of them, so they must have been skied a fair amount. And that will ultimately wear out the core. Everything has only so much life in it. And there are always ski's for sale that have had only a few weeks use.
My mate bought a pair of ski's recently that were supposed non-rental. When he got them they were clear markings/stickers to indicate they were rental. And they were bombed out. He got his money back. They were to all intent and purposes worthless.

^ You can buy great ex -rental if you buy niche kit and assess it in person e.g. demo/super premium skis tend only to be rented by the single day or shorter so may have far less wear and tear than your bog standard rental fleet. My brother bought a pair of Pocket Rockets this way back before fat skis were popular (ok so they were foam cored supernoodles so the loss of core strength may not have been such a big deal )

Thanks for the responses all.
I have been suitably deterred from buying ex-rental unless I can see them in the flesh.
