Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Megamum, ....just two things born of long experience....

First, actually learning to fill holes with ptex candles is very important. If you get a big divot near an edge, another ding can rip out the edge so it's best to fill the hole the moment it occurs. Light ptex candle using a gas ligher, hold metal scraper under it until you get drips, then hold over hole, move away metal scraper and drip hot ptex into hole until filled. Use a very sharp 1 inch chisel to take off excess and then wax over. Done.

Second, Perspex scrapers do indeed blunt fast. but don't use the toko re-sharpener-this can cause the scraper to get bowed and that will wreck your bases. Use the bench mounting holmenkol sharpener (45gbp) - worth it's weight in gold.

very good point (from a guy who bought a toko sharpener not long ago) hadnt thought of the toko messing up the flatness of the scraper....

spyderjon, that looks a good investment - I think the current scraper will last for the first three sets of skis, then I might have one of those from you.

Thanks for all the tips folks Very Happy

I must have done 15 waxings with my perspex scraper. Seems fine at the minute. How fast does this bluntness occur? Another £16.... mmmm...

Layne, another way to sharpen scrapers is to clamp a file to a bench to get a right angle... I find mine go blunt pretty quick..

Me too, haven't used a plastic one for years. Never damaged a base with a metal one.

One note on masking tape (OK, it's 25 posts back, but I only got to this thread now). Agree entirely that when doing edges it's not necessary - a paint brush (or a vacuum cleaner) work fine. Where I find it saves me time is after waxing, because I don't end up with wax drops and dribs all over the place and the ski bindings are clean. Use 2 inch stuff, at least around the bindings area.
