wonder if anyone has been here and has an opinion to offer?
am looking at a week there in early March with a bunch of maniacs, who will probably look to kill us all off-piste (one of them is convinced his chances of living to 50 are greatly increased by steering clear of people-filled pistes).
plan to stay here: http://www.basecamp-andermatt.com/en
good place for ski/apres? reasonable piste skiing as well as off for an intermediate skier who has done about 10 days total off piste?

Hi guys and girls
Andermatt is a serious high alpine skiresort for experienced freeriders. Located on the Alpine main ridge, between 1500m and 3000m with mostly runs wich are northfacing, steep, shady and having wind always as a factor. In other words it means that they got tons of snow, it stays cold and dry and also mostly untouched because lack of crowds. I would not recommend Andermatt for somebody who has 10 days freeriding under his belt and is traveling with a bunch of maniacs. For several reasons.
# No nightlife, one pub, one bar, thats it. Mostly hairy scandinavians and bunch of guys looking for snow is not the same as Ischgl and Kuhstall in terms of fun apres skiing.
# If you are inexperienced, the combination of weather, exposition, precipitation, steepness etc is not really the place where you want to find out that you have no clue how to use your beacon to find your buddies buried in an avalanche.
On the other hand....
Great little resort, no crowds during the week, easy access to backcountry skiing, bring skinns and it quadruples the options, lot of snow, etc
I stayed in the lodge and hostel www.basecamp-andermatt.com. Cool place to meet other skiers. No problem if you travel by your self. Its absolutely no party place, most guys and gals head out really early for skitouring. Kitchen for cooking saves tons of money and its only 10min down to the village for a beer or food if you are too lazy for cooking.
We had a local guide for the first couple days, just to find out the best runs and that our skis are way too narrow. Higly recommended: dan@birdos.com
Have fun and be safe!
Chris

The front bowl is steep but is mostly either piste orfairly near the piste. When you go further off at the back, and (skiers') left side there is lots of less steep off piste skiing.

Hi Snowball
The Andermatt area offers several areas with access from the Gemsstock cable car without skinning up at all.
North side Gemsstock is propably the "Bowl" you are referring to. This area is within the marked avalanche control and safe for freeride beginners. Gets also tracked out first.
The Soutside of Gemsstock is uncontrolled and gives access to the Guspis and Unteralp Valley. Both 10km+ long mellow areas for skiing.
The Northeast flank of Gemsstock is accessible from the top ridgeline and drops steep and shady towards Unteralp valley. A lot of good stuff here. Steep couloirs full of snow, absolutely not for the uninformed...
The Northwest flank opens into the Felsental valley, wich is a wide undulating valley and suitable for the most of the freeriders.
This all you can ski without climbing much/at all.
The Nätschen skiarea is southfacing and has some pretty good runs from the top down to the Oberalp passroad, be carefully as the snowpack wets out fast in the sun and gets unstable early afternoon.
From top of the Nätchen skisystem you can hike up 80m and ski down the nortside to Göschenen through the Rien valley. Come back with the train wich is included in you skipass. This run is STEEP in the beginning and has 1500m vertical offpiste skiing:-)
If you know what you are doing, have a look at the devils couloir. Yes, its skiable, might need a 80m rope in the end over a frozen waterfall. Dont fall, its steep, narrow, long and ends over a gnarly drop you might not wanna do!
After 15+ skiing years in this area, i still find every winter new skiable runs... Or maybe i just start to care less:-)
If you like skinning up, then its a whole new story because there is sooo much skiing to do...
Enjoy and be safe:-)
