Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Abetone

Hi.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this resort.

We are considering this area of Northern Tuscany for a holiday / retirement home and part of the draw is the fact that there looks to be a reasonable sized ski area within an hour or so of several of the towns in this area that we are looking at.

We are looking to visit Abetone for a couple of days to try the skiing but the only direct flights to Pisa from Manchester are with Jet2 starting at the beginning of April and I was wondering what the likelihood of there still being skiing available.

If anyone has been to the resort I would also appreciate any other feedback.

Thanks

Hi I have been to Abetone but in the summer alas.
It is a beautiful area and I enjoyed it a lot (I went with my family a good 16 yrs ago when I was a teenager!)
It didnt seem particularly huge but if you ahve a family I would recommend.
You will need a car, needless to say but it is pretty easy to get to.
I dont think though you will be skiing there in April.
It is the Appennines not the Alps....

Some photo reports from German forum. You can Google translate those links for text as well.

There are races on the calendar for the weekend of the 12th/13th April so there must be some history of there still being snow late in the season.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Wow if there is as much snow at the end of March as in the German reports then they will probably b skiing into May - 180cms at the village and 350cms up the mountain - it certainly looks very snowy and the area looks pretty good as well.

Steve.S, It might be exceptional year Wink as it was in most places last year.
Try to see if there is some info in text referring to other years or search for more reports on that forum.

Look like decent area, specially that you would not really expect it to be there Wink. Wonder how good are the lifts.
A bonus for anyone looking at Tuscany for sure.

I hope to go to Abetone in February. Best info I can find on the resort is at http://www.skiresort.info/ski-resort/abetone-val-di-luce/ from which it looks like the resort expects to be open from 'early December - late April'

pam w, I will - if I get there. The plan is to ski there for about 4 or 5 days and to have a couple of days in Rome, taking in the Italy v Scotland match in the 6 Nations. The headache is transport. Nearest airport is Bologna and I can't seem to find flights from the North of England or Scotland to Bologna / Pisa / Firenze
It might mean a trip to London and fly from there, or fly to Rome - but then it doesn't seem all that easy to get from Rome to Abetone.
We shall see. I haven't given up on this by a long way, but I haven't yet found a cheap / easy way of doing it either. I am even considering train from Paris but that train won't carry skis

You can get very good flights with Lufthansa from Manchester but it has a connection in Munich with only 45 mins between the flights which probably means no skis at Pisa even allowing for German efficiency
They fly daily but you would probably need to only take a carry on bag and hire in Abetone

Steve.S, I spent 4 days in near by Sestola. It is not the Alps but there was so much more to enjoy. The hills were a reasonable size, a variety of slope steepness and direction. If you go to Abertone it is close enough to check out. I absolutely loved staying in a fortified mediaeval town in the mountains and snow, so Italian and just like how I imagined things when reading Name of the Rose.

I was there in Jan so no info to impart for late season.

skiingian, Cimone Ski near Sestola looks fairly big as well: http://www.cimonesci.it/index.php/en/slopesaskilifts.html
Wow, both would be interesting places for a ski road trip Wink

 You know it makes sense.

Cimone was the name of the lift area. We drove through Abertone on the way in and it was a lively village.
