Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Day six and we're heading up Kerling the highest mountain on the Peninsula at 1538m. I initially climbed and skied this back in 2012 and had to do 1000m of ascent and descent carrying skis on scree which was not fun. Thankfully there was considerably more snow this year but even so this was the first tour we had to walk for a bit from the car to hit the snow line. The first time we walked up the obvious ridge line. This time we tried to skin up the shoulder where the ridge meets the glaciated plateau. This turned out to be considerably steeper and firmer than expected so we ended up booting up the majority of it which was less than stellar. The third option is to follow a gully up which would be very dodgy in the wrong conditions but absolutely great for us... you live and learn. It's all quite steep though and the guys on approach skis had major problems on the firm snow even with ski crampons.

Hard to judge scale but there are some lovely looking ski lines up here. Would be great sled accessed skiing.
This is the true summit and the corrie is a much easier proposition. A bit of skinning up the guts with a bootpack to the top which would be inaccessible except by a long ridge traverse in dodgy avi conditions or when it has a mahoosive cornice.
More opportunities for group skiing on the way back down.

Urrgh, press when it comes to Iceland is terrible. In reality the concern and protest about the road is primarily centered around the destruction of the lava field.
