In the run-up qualifying events for the Sochi Winter Paralympics, Heather Mills (28th in the world) has won silver in slalom at the Winter Games, Queenstown, NZ. Mills is 45 and joined the British Ski Team disabled development squad in 2010.
This is a big result, too, for her trainer John Clark (one-time British speed skier).

In many ways I am not surprised - regardless of what has been said about her, she has never had a lack of determination and ambition to put it mildly, and it's nice to see it applied somewhere other than bagging old pop stars! Makes a nice change seeing positive publicity about her that is not related to McCartney for once. Good for her indeed.

Why do we get video of the medal ceremony and none of the skiing ... and shouldn't she be wearing a helmet too ?

Fair question. WTF Ski Club (see OP) is currently negotiating international rights to this footage. We'll get back to you shortly ... or maybe not.

Metro reported her as losing by less than 10 seconds - possibly not appreciating that in ski racing this is the same as losing to Usain Bolt by that margin

fatbob, The categories in disabled racing can be quite broad, you would have to know exactly what was wrong with whoever beat her to make a judgement.

Indeed. I gather that the words "less than" were not contributed by Metro's ski racing correspondent (who is on permanent holiday) but by their 'London tube delay correspondent'.

Had a few beers with her at the Ski Show many years (around 1 ago. This was pre McCartney days when she was still famous for being a model who had lost a leg. She was actually a very nice person...

If you'd gone any further you'd have been legless.

On that day I believe I did end up legless. My friends at Skiworld won the Tour Operator dual slalom. In the final the other team had been the favourites due to having Graham Bell racing for them. I was able to address this apparent advantage as I was the flag man on the finish line...

Given the time and effort I've had to put in to achieve some level of competency as an able-bodied skier, I admire anyone who takes it on with a disability. So, well done, to all of them

So reading the results right, the headline by tomorrow should read "Beatles golddigger finishes last and still qualifies for Olympics" - fundamentally no matter how many gates she missed, no matter what the time, if she crossed the line she would have finished second. If only she invested some of her millions into supporting fellow paralympians desperately trying to secure funding.

For some extra context - a little more analysis than has so far been applied...
The 1st (1'56.86) & 2nd (2'05.07) placers on day 2 were DNF on Day 1.
The Day 1 winner came third on Day 2, with a combined time of 2'27.19.
HM was DNF on Day 2, her combined time on Day 1 was 2'09.09.
... erm, if that's a bit confusing - look at it this way (BTW there's no way of knowing who else was in their races from the way the DNFs are listed):
Day 1
1st 1'59.79 - SCHWARTZ Melanie
2nd 2'09.09 - MILLS Heather
D N F - PUEYO MARIMON Ursula
D N F - STARKER Alexandra
Day 2
1st 1'56.86 - STARKER Alexandra
2nd 2'05.07 - PUEYO MARIMON Ursula
3rd 2'27.19 - SCHWARTZ Melanie
D N F - MILLS Heather
So, IMV, not too shabby at all. Good on her and, FWIW, if I was a millionaire I'd be having a go too

Furthermore, her qualifying time is not far off the others when you take the spread into account - per details in my post above.

flowa, not sure I'd see 10 seconds off the pace as being not far off the others. That said, she got a time when others didn't, so not entirely without merit. But not sure that this is a huge achievement to write home about just yet for someone with her resources at their disposal.

Mistress Panda, her time isn't 10 seconds off the pace when you look at the spread. I'd guess too that the differences between LW2, LW4 & LW6/8-2 all have a bearing too, but not so significantly since they race in the same sport class.
|
It is 10 seconds off the pace - 10 seconds off the leader in her race (or class). That's a lifetime in ski racing, regardless of class.

Very unfair thing to say without any knowledge of if she is doing so - just because she's not told the media about it, doesn't mean she isn't giving support.
