Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Getting over the longest day hurdle and the heading away from the winter bit.

Nice to see the nights drawing in again. Swear I felt a bit of nip in the air this morning.

Could that cloud over there possibly contain some snow?

I felt a bit guilty for thinking that, I don't know why though, it's not like I'm wishing away any long hot summer days. I'm always happy once haymaking is out the way. The weather can do what it likes then, and it's 'roll on winter' because we have a barn full (hopefully) of lovely sweet hay!

As Winterhighland (great Scottish skiing website, for those who don't know) always describes it, the march back to winter has begun! I gleefully repeated that statement at work last week - & was told (by sedentary sun worshippers) that I am ill but don't realise it...

Mrs MA & I were out on the top of the North York Moors, above Kildale, at 10pm on Fri night to celebrate the solstice with a glass (well, plastic cup...) of wine. It was daylight at 10pm and still quite light at 10.40 - brilliant!

Big Paua, eben though I felt that I hadn't done enough skiing last year, and I managed quite a bit, much of it truly excellent, I am not ready yet to be considering the onset of winter. I want my proper summer first, lying by the pool, sweating in the sun with chilled beers and much beachiness book reading!!

Stop wishing your lives away!!

+1. I want my proper summer first too, including some dinghy sailing in Chichester Harbour when it isn't either freezing cold, or blowing a gale, or both. Not to mention walking in the Alps and picking lots of wild raspberries to make jam. The raspberries were disappointing last year - phenomenal the year before.

Nip in the air - we have hardly had a morning without one and this morning is similar. Still forecast is fine for the week and looking forward to a day or two watching the Aussies playing Somerset at Taunton and quaffing the odd glass of cider. Then when autumn is over the mind starts turning to skiing and a possible pre Xmas trip.

Lets hope you don't end up "in stook" looking at this wet weather for mid summers Confused

The purpose of these practices is to protect unthreshed grain, hay or straw from moisture until it can be picked up and brought into long-term storage. The unthreshed grain also cures while in a stook

There is deffo something in that cloud, you know. It had that bruised yellowy grey look of impending snow at sunset last night and again at sunrise this morning. It's gonna dump tonight for sure.
I've tracked it north across the river up through Hyde Park and on to Primrose Hill and it's a bit colder up here.
Folk are pointing and laughing at the 205 rockhoppers on my pack but they don't realise that my super lightweight AT boots are totally solid on the down as well as having serious, serious walk mode. Got the DIN on the bindings screwed right down too.
Might have to change my stance in the helmet argument - it's been pretty sweaty under this black one for the last couple of days - or at least order a new white one from Sport Pursuit which will reflect the sun better. Goggles keep fogging up despite the mini-fans. Might have to go for the sunglass helmet combo later... but that would make me look really fitzwilliam stupid!
Got all the vents open in the new lime green Sweet Protection trousers and jacket but the Goretex still isn't breathing heavy enough on this particular trip. Need to buy a Hy Vent Onesie for next season. Maybe some much lighter carbon poles.
Baselayer IS untucked. Top buckle on boots IS undone. Gloves will have to come off later. Spf 30 IS on - up nostrils and under armpits also - to catch the sun bounce off that snow which will surely fall soon.
It's definitely holistic, this earn your turns concept.

Oh seriously! Don't scare me! Everyone locally has put their hay down except us. Mind you, we still have so much left from last year, and we're facing the unpleasant task of shifting it from one barn to another this weekend. Sad

That being said, it's not often we get the chance to make hay this early in the year. Fortunately we don't require 'rocket fuel' hay for my lot, so a later cut is actually better for us.

I'll just be glad when it's all in. wink

Fenfilly, so you missed it!! Poor you. We have tractors all around our lanes this week with hay making implements on. We only have a smallholding so make all ours by hand with a 'Herbie' and hand turn and stack the loose dry hay in our barns. Balers are a small fortune to buy! Luckily we have no need for rocket fuel either!

Herbie is very cute! How many acres of hay do you make with it?

Fenfilly, I guess all told between 2 and 3 of the 10 we have, it's difficult to visualise as we cut around all the trees and take only the choicest bits from each area. Hiring a full blown tractor is not practical due to fences, trees etc. We turned loads by hand tonight, and I've gone down the route of hay fever central this evening and have needed to resort to Piriton. A mask tomorrow I think!
