Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

French flashing

no, not that kind.

I got flashed by a camera around Albertville on my return from the EOSB first weekend. I remembering wondering "what the H?" as I'm almost 100% sure that I was doing 90 in the 90 zone - I had set the cruise control a minute or two before, and glanced at the speedo straight after the flash. Official letter just came, said 97km/h.

On the other hand, I might not always have been precisely at or below the speed limit on all other French motorways / roads.

WWSHD? Contest or call it karma and pay up? We're talking 50 Euros or so.

horizon, If it's the fixed camera shortly after the reduction to 90, I don't think it's likely to be wrong, so little point in contesting it. There is even a speed check about 200m before the camera that tells you your speed. This shows around 4kph less than my speedo is showing.

Patch, what can I say, I was very surprised when I got flashed as I'm well aware of the speed limit and cameras in Albertville. Of course I could be wrong, it's happened at least once before (in 1998, I think wink ).

horizon, I think my car got flashed by exactly the same one -just be Albertville in a section of roadworks. We were also running on Cruise which was also set aappropriately. I have not received a letter yet. The trouble is that mine is a RH drive car, but it will have taken a photo of the LH side (I should think) where I was sitting as a PASSENGER at the time. I wonder where I stand when, I guess, the inevitable letter turns up.

^^Depends on country of registration of the car, and which countries have reciprocal agreements with each other. UK and France don't afaik. Germany and Holland do.

Been flashed at 30 in a 40 zone before now. I was doing exactly the speed limit (as indicated on the speedo, so ignoring the slight over-reading), saw the car in front get flashed at the same speed, so slowed down! No ticket fortunately. That would have been a pita to contest.

I've done the same thing coming out of the tunnel at Chambéry. I know exactly where the camera is, and what the speed limit is, and I wasn't daydreaming ... just had a brain freeze and got flashed

I managed to win 2 speeding tickets when ferrying some friends across Switzerland. I had to do 2 return trips and each time I came out of the same tunnel (san gottard maybe?) anyway, I got the 2 tickets sent though to my house in Scotland from the Swiss Police or court but I didn't bother paying and there was no problem entering the country again?

During the same trip, I 'forgot' to buy a motorway carnet and got pulled over by the cops. I thought I was up the creek but I noticed the guys in front of me were paying with the old school carbon print slidey thing (remember them from the 80's) instead of a hand held credit card reader; the cops explained to me that their mobile device was caput but I wasn't getting away with it as they were using their back up system with the carbon paper............so I used my old credit card I had cancelled the week before (I thought I had lost it buy found it at the back on my wallet).......AND they gave me the Carnet as I had to buy one as well as pay a fine Cool.

Nothing happened and I have flown into Switzerland a few times since (I have also driven but not in the same car) I couldn't care less as the Swiss system is annoying and the Police were decks about the whole thing.

In this case, I can live with it. It was a bit silly but the police men were acting like decks, constantly banging on about how this was not England and how English rules don't apply here (I'm Scottish) so I did it and there you go. Not a wink of sleep was lost.

Megamum, highly unlikely you will receive a fine, as the reciprocal arrangement isn't in place yet. Horizon doesn't live in the UK , so has received his notice. So the letter is not inevitable. Even if it does, they can't put points onto your UK licence.

under a new name,

I am VERY surprised they sent a Detective Inspector AND a Detective Sergeant to enforce a request from another national police force with regards to an unpaid speeding fine. Even EAW's are normally dealt with by beat Pc's unless there is a really good reason (the suspect having a history of violence or the offence involving serious fraud or organised crime etc). Our police force is stretched enough as it is so it's unusual to here they sent two fairly senior officers attending to enforce an unpaid fine from the Swiss police.......and to hear that they travelled out to see him to give him the option to pay is highly unusual, they don't normally act as debt collectors.....

Are you sure you are getting the whole story!! If I were you I wouldn't lend your mate any money!

davidhammy, really absolutely true and my story hammered to bits on here on another thread, but resilient and robust. My mate was gobsmacked.

To be fair, the good officers of the Met were somewhat sheepish (presumably also due to their rank) but held to what they had to do, which would have included escorting him, (a reasonably upright citizen) to Thiefrow for his flight under escort to Zurich and thence Bern. In cuffs.

Megamum, I got flashed outside Paris in a hire car. Hire company charged me 40 Euro for handing over my details. I called them to find out what they had charged me for, they told me that they were obliged to hand over my details, but that plod never bothered chasing it for simple speeding. Didn't hear another thing about it. Was witness to a minor shunt this year. Hung around to give statement etc. When plod asked for my driving licence and took a note of the DL number and asked where I was staying, I started sweating Happy . Still nothing came of it

BTW its called a Vignette....not that we're splitting hairs here. Its only 40 chuffs, so hardly a fortune, loads of people think they can swerve getting one, but it still works out cheaper than the Peage. I know the Swiss plods can be a bit officious but compared to the French they're pretty good.

I got flashed on the autobahn somewhere near Duisberg, I think, on the way back from Avoriaz last month. I think it was a point where a 120 limit reduced to 90 and I didn't take enough notice. Not heard anything, four weeks later so I am optimistic, but we shall see - does the UK have an arrangement with Germany?

nope

edit: that one would cost you about €80 or so, plus 1 point in Germany (equivalent to 3 pts in UK). yep they can even register points against a non-German licence, but they remain only on the German system.

under a new name, I would imagine that in your friends case maybe it got sent to court already and the judge had issued a warrant for arrest I can recall hearing of something similar occuring before and I suspect it may be down to how much he exceded the speed limit by as I understand that in Switzerland the fines are fixed up to a certain point but if you exceeed the speed limit by 25kph in an urban area, 30 kph on open roads and 35kph on a motorway then it has to go to court and the will take a fine proportionate to your earnings, (and it will be big) Exceed any speed limit in Switzerland by more than 40kph and you are likely to be in very serious trouble, on the other hand if you are in the low bracket <15,20 or 25kph respectively above the limits then chances are you will get away without paying as these fines are I think administered by the local Swiss police and they have more important things to do than arrest you for not paying up to about 260 ChF they also will not bother passing on your details to immigration.

I think I got flashed a month ago on the Tauernbahn heading from Radstadt to Salzburg. I was being overtaken going into a tunnel just where the limit reduces, I noticed a flash twice, I thought once for the car overtaking and once for me, but so far I've not received anything. We were both definitely speeding, I was coasting rather than braking to reduce my speed down to the new limit.

If it comes through I'm expecting the admin charge from Hertz to be more than actual fine.

hammerite, that sounds like one of Ben's favourite cameras! Laughing Laughing

They are getting really quite strict on the 100 kmh limit along the Tauernautobahn (A10) with more and more cameras being put in, especially approaching the tunnels driving northbound. There is a camera on the hill down towards the first tunnel (where the Pfarrwerfen/Werfen junction joins the A10) and another just before the entrance to the second tunnel. If you were being overtaken you may just get away with it on the assumption that the other car tripped the camera. The only leniency you get by the way, is 3kmh regardless of your speed. I am expecting a few more to go in over the summer and maybe also an average speed one for when the IG-L signs are in action. The one they installed in Tirol on the A12 as an experiment has been a rip-roaring success for them, primarily from foreign registered cars apparently. So for a cash-strapped region like Salzburg (victims of a major fraud due to unregulated speculation) it could help fill the coffers. Evil or Very Mad

This was a temp camera set up in what looked like the rear of a white van, inside the road works. Although the cruise was set well inside the normal 110kmph limit, I suspect they had lowered the limit for the road works. Neither of us saw the reduced speed signs, only the flash as we went through the road works. Either way it cannot be that expensive and I'm certain that madam will gladly fess up when the demand arrives! Toofy Grin wink

most roadworks are usually 80, or 60 where there's the bit where it crosses over to/from contra flow and temporary junctions etc.
plus there are usually plenty of prior gradual signs beforehand too.

US (or at least some US states) have the right idea... fines double in construction zones

Forgot all about this, but I got flashed at least twice in Albertville going through the same stretch. No idea what will happen with the ticket, if it is enforceable, or what the penalty might be for driving at the advertised speed limit for the road - I presume because of roadworks the limit was reduced, but I couldn't work out what the limit was. We were looking out for signs and saw none, were travelling at similar speed to everyone else on the road, and got flashed. It didn't even seem like roadworks, just a really badly organised bit of road going through that bit of town.

Nothing happened for now Wink Friend of mine (he's not Swiss) had similar thing almost 10 years ago, and last year, when they were coming back from training in Chile, he spent night in Zurich airport jail, because at 10pm, when they landed, he couldn't pay those 100chf anymore since noone responsible for that, was there anymore, and he couldn't pay them before morning. So he had really "pleasant" night. Not to mention his connecting flight was missed, so he needed new ticket, which is not for free either, and police doesn't cover these "extra" expenses Wink
These things come after you sooner or later. Maybe not right away, but sooner or later it comes after you in one way or the other. 2 years ago, on World championships in Garmisch, few guys were denied accreditation due some unpaid tickets from past. No questions asked no chances to pay them, they just didn't got accreditation and there it went their job. Is it worth not paying those few euro? I don't know, for me it's not, but on the end, you decide Wink

Boooooo

Received letter from Hertz at the weekend, just when I thought I'd got away with it! It was me that got flashed and not the car overtaking me (maybe both of us).... I was doing 113kmh where the speed limit dropped from 120 down to 100kmh at the entry to a tunnel (rather than braking I just took my foot off the accelerator).

The fine was only €30 Very Happy . The admin fee from Hertz was €22.80 and the fee from my bank to pay by IBAN/Swift code was £9 for each transaction Sad (one for Hertz, one for Salzburger Land). Seems they don't get the police involved so no transferring of points from what I could work out.

Ouch at the extra fees.
There'll be no points on UK licence. They can log points on their system though against your UK licence number, if they want to, but they don't get transferred. (Germany does this, but dunno about Austria).
