Masque, very bright guy by all accounts including starting Shred Optics which from the number of kids I see with his kit is a roaring success.
He sounds like every other Park City resident I have ever known. Sometimes our own prejudice block the reality of the person in front of us. You don’t have to sound like you were educated in Eaton to be clever or smart.

I think he's great, had the pleasure of seeing him win a GS in ValD a couple of years ago. What I find a little ironic is that he was very vocal in slagging off the new GS skis and yet he's been so completely dominant on them.

I think that's Bode cleverly disguised as Ted..
It was one of the best World's performances ever no doubt. But I still think Lasse Kjus in Vail was easily the best I've ever seen at a WC.

He was dragging his knuckles along the snow. I have never seen anything like it, the pace was in a whole different class. Fantastic to watch.

Masque, look at how "long and strong" his outside leg is, enabling him to work with the enormous forces being generated. Look at how flexed his inside leg is ("long leg, short leg"), enabling him to create astonishing edge angles. Useful principals to discuss if you're teaching reasonably experienced recreational skiers, and important fundamentals of skiing that you should bear in mind when teaching beginners and improvers. No holiday skier is going to come within a million miles of his performance, but the basics are the same and taking The Shred as an inspirational example will be no bad thing.

Watched him last night on ski sunday and loved his carved skid coming into some of the gates. I'm sure there is a technical term for it that someone here can enlighten me on. In very simplistic terms it kind of looked like a hockey stop at mach 10 mid carve to scrub speed coming into a gate.

Love Ted! But I don't like the new ski regs. Some gates are just too close together to get a proper carve and it just looks, well, messy. Fantastic event though, watched it all on Eurosport. Will miss Alberto Tomba!

When was the last time America won more Winter Olympic Gold Skiing Medals than Austria, if ever? If Vonn had not been injured the tally could have been even higher.

Thanks had forgotten about Vancover. The Austrians appear to be smarting about being beat at home. They either print the results showing that Austria won the most medals in Schladming and/or print the tables since the games begun (with Austria at the top of the list).

DB, I suspect their pride is severely bruised! One Male Gold, silver and 2 Bronze and one Women’s Silver and two Bronze individually and team gold. I would be amazed if some heads did not role on the coaching side.
There are some talented young Austrians but nobody that I can see competing for the downhill in Sochi, and a very heavy reliance on Hischer for 3 medals from that table.

Fattes13,
Yes pretty much agree although without Ligety America would have been even further down the results table than Austria without Hirscher. The days of Maier, Eberharter, Walchofer, Raich etc are gone. If Vonn & Ligety are both on form and injury free it's likely America will top the medals table next time round too. The Austrian press has criticised the Austrian coaches for concentrating too much on older members of the team while not developing the up and coming members of the Austrian Ski team enough. I suspect the Austrian coaches were sweating a bit as Hirscher made his second run on Sunday

I suppose one might make a case that, with the possible exception of Walchofer, the Austrians may have stuck with Maier, Eberharter and Raich a season or two too long - tough call to make when they were such "legends".
Interesting counterpoint is the regular commentary (Eurosport mainly) suggesting that there is always such a fight for places in the Austrian team with constant pressure from the up and coming programme.

TBF, there are similar complaints about the US team programme.

Chasseur, rjs,
Yes it's not an easy choice, Raich scraped through to qualify but if the oldies were kicked at a younger age then Austria would have not bagged Bronze in the slalom (Mario Matt).
|
|
|
|
|
|
DB, impossible to make that argument IMHO because who knows what may have happened had they kicked him (MM) out earlier.
Not taking anything away from MM - I for one was really delighted he medalled.
