Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just back from my first visit to L'Espace Killy and posting a random selection of photos from a great week. Hope to return some day. Cool

10 PM on Sunday night, fireworks over the snow front ...

Next day, and while a 4 piece band murdered Bohemian Rhapsody, the view from a window in town ...

Valerie, the ESF instructor/leader, poised above one of our first big powdery descents. As the only native English speaker, I discovered that level 4 group classes are dominated by the French but I was still made to feel most welcome Little Angel ...

She took us through some nice, powdery gullies and some trees above Le Fornet too ...

And some more trees ...

The mid April Toofy Grin view from halfway down the Face de Bellevarde towards the Col de L'Iseran ...

The does-what-it-says-on-the-tin and very convenient Chalet Hotel Chamois D'Or ...

Being so close to Bellevarde, fresh snow on 'Orange' down to La Daille was one of the most enjoyable marked runs of the week with 8 inches of early morning snow over a flat bashed base but there many more opportunities for fresh tracks on piste as well as off ...

Although by the time you got to the far side of Tignes, the snow was chopped and sun affected ...

But there were lots of brightly coloured onesies to snap Laughing ...

Summer has arrived Cool spring conditions from the outset followed by an early finish as things got very soft. Snow melting rapidly off the roofs and a very serious avalanche risk (4). Hopefully it will freeze tonight ahead of some spring skiing in the morning and a pleasant lunch........

Spent the weekend just past in the EK, all I can say is wow. Stunning conditions, powder at all levels Sat after a dump on Friday night, very warm yesterday but snow lovely up high and turning slushy at resort level. Still masses of snow at all levels, avalanches going off everywhere you look tho so please be careful if you are going/there just now. Of my 6 ski holidays/weekends this season the conditions this time were the best of all! on the 13/14th April!

And summer continues - but for how long......

Hard pistes this morning which soon softened to slush lower down. Up on the glacier there was some great spring skiing and also a lot of work going on to dig out the 'summer lifts', more of the glacier has been pisted to serve the lifts - a bit more room for us all when the valley is slushy.

Popped to Bourg for the last shop this season - it was 0 degs in the bowels of the carpark and 23 degs in Super U car park in Bourg this afty, confused car!

Looks like a lot of weather arriving from Thursday night with temps dropping rapidly from Friday (0 deg isotherm drops from above 3400 to around 1400) - so we might be in for a weekend of clouds and great snow (highish up obviously).

I would just like to say that I had a fantastic day in Le Fornet on Sunday, superb conditions for the time of year. This after another glorious day in Ste Foy on Saturday skiing powder on the penultimate day of the season. A wonderful way to finish off the season.

Another spring day with a whole variety of conditions. Face de Bellvarde was at its easiest at 10 this morning with softening snow but so many people that it was like the wacky races (medal medal medal). We skied mostly in Fornet - every run was different and a pleasant lunch in the sun at Les Cascades.

The main story was the number of enormous avalanches around the area - Santons looked like a battle field and you didn't have to stand and stare long before you saw one. The whole slope above the last narrow pitch on Face (before the piste widens down the last couple of pitches into VDI) had gone at some stage - don't know whether it was natural or induced but the debris was down the centre of the piste half way to the Peau de Vache Restaurant (formerly Le Tannerie). The slope had been closed - but unbelievably people were still ducking under the ropes at 1530!!

Bulletin writing just been interrupted - the pisteurs are doing a lot of blasting on the Lavachet Wall above Trolles - huge amounts of snow coming down onto the piste - the bashers will have a lot to do tonight Shocked

Another fantastic day on piste - glorious blue skies and a bit of local knowledge used to follow the decent snow around - finished up at the top of the glacier and a late lunch back at the pad.

Just a couple of photos of avalanche activity - the first is a picture of the pisteur induced ones that I wrote about last night - if you look very closely on the left side of the piste looking uphill you can see some black blobs which are guys rescuing the couple of snow cannons which got knocked over by the slip:

And this one is of natural activity below Grapillon de Merles (looking north-west from the top of the Grand Huit Chair:

Another fantastic day spent cruising the pistes of the Solaise and a very lazy coffee at L'Ouillette. Blue skies throughout. The Marmottes are now out in force catching up on lost time I imagine........ wink

However, tomorrow will be a different story starting with rain changing to snow through the day - the forecast expects 30-50cm of snow over Fri night/Saturday - here's hoping the zero degree isotherm gets on the quick bus to Bourg!

I'm gonna be out in Tignes for a few days next week (skiing tue-fri), if anyone fancies meeting up for a bit of a ski and/or beer then give me a shout - i'll be mainly skiing with my gf most of the time (it's our 10th anniversary of being together- any excuse she says for me to suggest a ski trip!ha), but i'm a fair bit more adventurous than she is so she is happy for me to go and have a blast on my own for a few hours.

Yuk! Fog and drizzle this morning - so it was end of season tasks and the gym. But the good news is that the cool down has happened a good few hours earlier than forecast and it is now snowing in Le Lac (2100m) (1400 hrs) - here's a foty to prove it:

You can also see how much snow has disappeared from the buildings since the 9th of April if you look back to that day's post. The forecast is for about half a metre of snow over the weekend and as the drizzle only lasted for 2-3 hours we have lost little (up here) and should gain a lot - so for those heading out snowHead snowHead snowHead snowHead

If you are flying tomorrow no snags in the UK and you will need a brolly in France /GVA as it will be raining most of the time. It might also be a bit bumpy on the approach due to gusty winds (and for use of a brolly actually!)

Interesting day;

At 09.00 we had some high clouds and then this happened;
https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10151538950218446

By 09.45 the cloud had come up the valley and enveloped everything upto about 2500m and the viz was 50 meters Sad

By 11.30 it was snowing above 2500m and rain/sleet below and the viz didn't improve.

By 14.00 it was snowing down to 2100m and currently it is snowing hard at 2100m

Tomorrow could be another great day Very Happy Very Happy

Captain Snowy, Just EVO2 and ESF by the looks of it:

Unless you can find a Brit instructor and bribe him away from building/plastering/decorating. Scotty's in Lavachet or the Alpaka would be a good place to ask around.

As for today - well. The first lifts opened at 10.30 and we were on the second Palafour chair - as excitement mounted we got off to find 2 foot of snow which was most definitely not powder! For a good deal of the run we had to pole just to get enough speed up to move (even on quite big skis). Kids were just grinding to a halt and even those on the dark side were finding it tricky Twisted Evil After a couple of runs enough folk had passed to allow almost a normal descent - even just off the side was virtually un-skiable (although I suspect many blogs/tweets/farcebook posts will suggest otherwise (Gas Board doesn't work Saturdays!)). After an Italian coffee at the Jam Bar the light improved and we tried to get higher but as the day warmed up (relatively) it meant the deep snow was in the same condition - the sun has made brief appearances followed by heavy showers. More of the same tonight so by Monday/Tuesday the pistes will be in superb condition when the heaviest precipitation passes. Avi risk now 4 so take care out there!

Weather for the airports all ticketyboo for tomorrow. snowHead snowHead

It was snowing heavily last night when i went to bed but this morning we have bright sunshine & prestine slopes Very Happy
The pisteurs having beeen waking the marmottes up, once again, by blasting the slopes for the past hour. Hopefully everything will be safe but the avalanche risk is 4/5 so no silly stuff today.

The big decisions are factor 15 or 20 & powder skis or my favourite GS skis Puzzled

Factor 10 and the Scott Crusades!

Much better than yesterday as the pisteurs were able to open a lot of the slopes on time - we only had about a foot over night. So it was fresh tracks on piste, in powder for the first hour or so before some rapid consolidation - though there were a few pitches on north facing slopes that lasted a bit longer -didn't go far off piste due to the high avi risk (4).

Val's Club de Sport were having a fancy dress day - so lots of vicars, nuns, monks and a pope (do Prada do red ski boots?) around OK orange Shocked

More precipitation due tonight and tomorrow but with the 0 deg isotherm marching back up the hill I wouldn't like to speculate as to what it may bring.

Another great day in the Espace Killy Very Happy Very Happy

This morning started off overcast but a quick look on the web cams showed clear blue skies over 2900 meters & the clouds between 2500 & 2900 meters. So whilst some of my friends headed off for the Grand Motte glacier i decided to stay a little lower and wait for the clouds to clear. I understand the powder on Grande Motte was pretty special whilst the pistes lower down were in excellent condition.

The sun eventually broke through around 11.00am and by 11.30 we had virtuall clear blue skies Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Tomorrow is looking clear and bright so hopefully another great day.

monotokpoint, Very central and there will be a bit more life up in Le Lac - Boisses has very little left in terms of après - other than MS's own bar.

Another fine day in the Alps - still loads of snow on piste - even Fontaine Froid which is normally brown at the end of Mar and closed now still has perfect cover without a stone in sight. If this is climate change - bring it on! Quite a lot of French visitors here during one of their holiday weeks so we even had to queue for a couple of minutes at the top of the Motte. But:
