@GeorgeVII, Brill, there's plenty of Yorkshre in the tea caddy!
Just been to the World Cup Half Pipe finals, must be a year ago this week since we watched it. Had a few beers in the Whitney Bar (ouch) until the queue for the bus home cleared!

Been watching this thread for ages, flying out at 6am tomorrow and am really excited now! I do hope snow-forecast is correct as it's telling us more snow to come in Tignes next week!
If you see a skier who looks like he's been tangoed next week...that'll be me, very orange!

I'm also flying out tomorrow and very excited!
Does anyone know how long it would take a fairly good (although not technically) skier to get from Les Brevieres to the top of the Montet lift (i.e. one side of Espace Killy to the other)?
I'm clearly going to be aiming for maximum value for money for my pass

@gixxerniknik, A bit of snow, but as its from 'April Shhowers' it is a bit of a lottery. If SF puts a one instead of a nought in its algorithm, its says lots of snow, it may vanish at the next turn of the hamster wheel.
@AccountAnt80, Depends on your route, skiing all the way: 2 to 2.5 hours, if you want to explore Le Fornet and not spend all day travelling then up the Sache Bubble, Aiguille Rouge chair, down Bluets to the Toviere Gondola, ski all the way into La Daille and get the bus to Le Laisinant (one stop before Fornet), up that chair and then down to the Signal for the Vallon Gondola Cascades Express, that will be 1hr15 to 1:30.
And last night, the SFR World Cup Halfpipe Final in Val Claret:
It was very cold, so watching the second half in the Whitney Lounge was a much more comfortable, decadent and expensive way. The locals went bonkers when Kevin Rolland won and Martine Martinod got bronze (both La Plagne).
This morning was bright, blue and cold but soon warmed up in the sun. A chilly breeze at height prevented overheating. As it was from the east and strong at 4000m there was some spectacular lens cloud (altocumulous lenticularis for the officianado, or flying saucers to the kids) over the Italian Frontier. I spent the day on piste around Tignes and Val D'Isere, after yesterdays sun a lot of the pistes were hard early on, but it is not yet warm enough to make them slushy late afternoon. This heating is increasing the weight of the snow, tomorrow the avalanche risk rises from 2 to 3 in the afternoon as a wet slide could be triggered. It is now the time of year to consider off piste a mainly morning activity and then have a latish lunch.
Tomorrow will be the same as today weather wise. Sunday wil be very similar with a bit more cloud and wind in the afternoon, a layer in a rucksack would be a good plan. Likewise Monday and Tuesday. We are then into 'April Showers' for a couple of days so take your pick really!
For those travelling by air tomorrow, the main problem is the high pressure over the south of England. It will be misty from Birmingham southwards and all 4 London airports are forecasting a 30-40% chance of fog, nothing to stop flying but if it happens (and 4 x 30% =120% so its a fair bet somewhere will get it) there could be delays. Up North they may be a bit of mist. Over here, Geneva and Chambery are bot forecasting a nice day, Lyon and Grenoble are forecasting a bit of mist, and there is a slim chance of some freezing fog at Grenoble before 9, but aircraft should still be able to land. Lets hope Chambery has a god day and no kids cause a bomb scare by leaving a rucksack in the terminal (last Sunday on a glorious day!!)

Another glorious day, there was just a hint of haze in the air but nothing to spoil a great day for charging round firm (but not hard) pistes, not a stone in sight, even down into La Daille. The whole Espace Killy seemed to be deserted (except the Cable car for the Grande Motte!). We saw quite a few spring avalanches triggered by the heat, some particularly big ones above the Triffloet down into La Daille. A small slip also shut the road near Boisses this afternoon, standby for some afternoon blasting by the pisteurs after the lifts close.
Tomorrow will be similar to today but with quite a few fluffy clouds aloft, especially towards the Italian border. Order is restored on Monday, as today but with just a hint of an easterly wind. A veil of cloud will obscure the sun on Tuesday afternoon after another nice morning. And then it will be sunshine and showers on Wednesday, with the snowline down to 1600m, but nothing too drastic. The snow gods look to be favouring Le Fornet again as its an easterly.
For those "slipping the surly bonds of Earth" (John Gillespie Magee - High Flight) tomorrow it will be misty in the UK and most of the airfields from Leeds Bradford and south have a warning for a chance of fog. Gatwick lost that lottery today and ended up with a number of delays, if I had to bet Luton looks a tad more susceptible tomorrow. At he ski resort side all is well at Geneva, Chambery and Lyon, but there is a slim chance of early fog at Grenoble, but as it is not a busy airport (terminal excepted) it shouldn't cause too many problems.

Hmmmm, hopefully it will have cleared a bit by 10.30, hope we're not too delayed from Gatwick tomorrow.
What's the best time to head for the Motte, lunchtime? In the last 7 trips I've only been up there a couple of times because it's always been so busy - or shut.
I actually fancy braving Santons one morning next week as I've avoided it for years!!

There were indeed some fluffy clouds this morning, some were so fluffy that there was a few flocons up above 3000m where there was a chilling wind. The pistes were harder this morning, indeed there were a few areas with scraped hard pack early on. But nothing to realy worry about, its getting towards spring skiing time, but as we have great snow depths it will be a while before we see stones or bare patches.
There will be a few clouds around as the sun rises but these will disperse to leave a sunny day, but there will be a breeze to chill things down on the very high lifts; its not quite t shirt weather yet. Tuesday will see a bit more cloud especially around the high peaks and a few flocons of snow after the lifts have closed. Wednesday is a bit complicated, the weather system is coming from the east and it depends how far it manages to battle over the Italian Border. Some of the apps are getting quite excitable, I will wait and see, but Val D'Isere will get a bit more than Tignes and a lot more than the 3 Vallees and Paradiski (Fornet Thursday anyone?????). There will also be a gusty wind. Thursday will see the return of sunny periods and one or two of the showers may give a bit of snow down to about 1800m. Friday sees the return of high pressure and the sun, but there may be fog down the valley.

Firstly, I have to start with sad news a 35 year old French snowboarder died in the Manchet valley in Val D'Isere this afternoon after losing control. More here: http://www.radiovaldisere.com/index.php?p=infos&id=6170
RIP
It was a beautiful but cold morning this morning, as we had decided to head for Le Fornet, an extra layer was a wise move. The snow over there was fantastic on piste, off piste was very varied and that really goes for the whole of the Espace Killy (unless you are prepared to hike for a while). We headed back via the Solaise, which was a game of two halves split at the top of the Solaise Express. Above, it was fabulous below was very hard packed and the less said about Rhone Alpes the better! After a quick lunch in La Daille we cruised round the ever reliable Palet Sector in Tignes.
Tomorrow will start sunny but clouds will soon start appearing and by the close of play the sky should be obscured with a few flocons, also watch out for the wind picking up in the afternoon, it will feel cold by then. Wednesday will be snowy and cold and there will be a strong wind so expect the lower parts of both resorts to be busy. It is an easterly so forecasting the amount of snow is tricky, but there should be enough to cover the piles of dark snow by the sides of the road, but talk of a massive powder day would be a little premature! Thursday will be bright and sunny but it will still be windy, a nice day on the terrace but woolly hats still required on the hill. Friday looks much more like spring, sunny, calm and warmer and so does Saturday.

That's terrible. Can anyone explain what happened to him I can't understand French.
It was warm out of the wind today, I went all over, first all the way to Fornet and then back to Tignes up the grand motte twice and then pootling around palet, similar to chocksaway I guess. Legs are tired now

@Minion1980, In a nutshell, he was riding skiers left of Piste S in an area called Marmottes. He then lost control of his speed, hit a bank and was thrown high into the air and landed in a stream bed. The injuries were fatal and it was all in view of the terrace of the Clochetons restaurant.
Today started fine and cold, the mercury was well down this morning. As we gained altitude it was just possible to see the first of the clouds off to the North-East, these gradually bore down on us through the morning but the sun was not properly obscured until about 3 o'clock. We had a charge round hard pistes initially including the Palet sector in Tignes, then up to the Grand Motte where the queue for the cable car was the biggest I have seen - it was onto the steps of the Panoramique It also appears that they are no longer pisting Leisse, so not such an easy black now. After lunch we cruised round the Bellvarde sector in Val D'Isere, again quite hard pistes out of the sun. Off piste was mostly a crusty selection of teeth chattering frozen crud.
There was a first today - the first butterfly of the season was flying up the side of the Tichot Chair. It is also quite busy in Val Claret with European Gay Pride Week, the big parade is on Thursday evening. There is also the chance to see how fast you are actually skiing/riding with a laser measured speed trap on a specially prepared bit of the Lognan Racing stade.
We are expecting it to start snowing lightly sometime after dark. There are many and varied forecasts for the amount of snow over the next 36 hours, some quite promising, some quite disappointing so my guess (and its not much more than that) is 10-15cm in Tignes, another 5 or so in Val D'Isere and maybe 20-35 in Le Fornet. For those folks in Paradiski, the news is not so good 5-10cm at best. So the intensity of the snow will vary throughout tomorrow, but it will remain cloudy all day and be quite windy, especially in the afternoon. It will be colder than today and in the wind I suggest a full winter outfit if you plan to go higher than 2200m or so. The wind will blow through the night into early Thursday, and the sky will be partially obscured by cloud as you tuck in to Pain Cholcolat. But the sky will clear to leave a sunny day, out of the breeze it will be a warm day; as will a sunny Friday when there will be less wind. Saturday and Sunday will be magnificent in the mountains, as high pressure begins to dominate and temperatures rise by day. The downside will be the potential for fog down the valley for those coming to and fro. Its not the end of the snow though as early next week looks like being an 'April Showers' week with sun, snow and bubbly cloud in the mix and a little cooler than the weekend. Should suit Lady G

@chocksaway, Jesus that sounds awful poor guy. Thanks for explaining. Pistes are indeed quite hard and were scraped down to hardpack in a lot of places by mid afternoon so I spent most of the day lapping the small kickers in the tignes snow park. I can land them most of the time now. Someone really f'd themselves up on a large kicker this morning saw them treating the person for some time, I hope they are ok

Well the forecasts were many and varied but none went quite as low as the 5cm we were sent . The snow stopped over the Italian Border, we were left with some redistributed by the wind. It was a brutal wind today, even down in Les Brevieres and many of the high lifts were closed. I was on an off piste day with Evolution 2 and even the instructor remarked that it is not often you see white capped waves on the Lac Du Chevril We spent the morning in The Sache Valley, where the snow was windpacked on high, nice in the middle and hard packed and lumpy to the bottom. But we did see the first Chamois of the season on the far wall of Sachette, grabbing what little grass they could from inside a big crack where the snow had slipped down the hill a bit. Whilst on the nature theme we also spotted an eagle above the Chaudanne. The afternoon was a little more gentle with a trip down Glattiers and La Cheminée du Gurran.
And now the weather, the dice have had a shake up since yesterday and we have contrasting forecasts for Sunday but here goes....Early tomorrow the skies should clear leaving a sunny morning, but a few clouds on the peaks. The wind should almost vanish by lift opening, but expect a bit of blasting from the pisteurs in the morning, especially on high, so you may have to be patient for the high lifts. A few more clouds will develop in the afternoon. The temperature will be a good 4 degrees higher and with the lack of wind after 10am it should be a whole lot more pleasant. Friday and Saturday will be similar, sunny and warm. there is change afoot for Sunday which will be warm with sunny periods ahead of those April showers next week.

@wibble44, I'm sure very bar will have it in Albertville - just stand up for the French National anthem and you will gain respect for the match.
The skies cleared quite quickly this morning to leave a bright blue day. The odd bit of cloud did escape Italy on the southerly breeze (which was very chilly), at one stage the Panoramique restaurant looked like it had a beret of cloud on top of it. The pistes were a little more forgiving today as it had been warmer overnight, so a great day charging round the Aiguiile Percée sector in Tignes and then over towards the Grand Pré in Val D'Isere. All the pistes still have a great snow depth, its just the surface conditions that vary thanks to aspect and how much sun they get before the refreeze starts. There are patches of hardpack but only in areas of high traffic.
Tomorrow will be sunny throughout, the air will be 3 degrees or so warmer and the breeze at altitude should almost disappear, making it a great last day of the week. There may be the odd cloud on the high ridges. For those remaining Saturday will be the same, but there is a chance of mist in the early morning down the valley, hopefully not enough to disrupt the 29000 vehicles leaving the valley between Moutiers and Albertville and the 27000 coming up. Expect queues of traffic at peak times though. Sunday will start with a thin veil of cloud, but the sun should break through in the afternoon, before snow showers after dinner. These will continue through Monday with a variable snow line depending on the time of day. Tuesday and Wednesday look like being days of sunny periods and fluffy clouds.

Spring has Sprung , at least temporarily. Today was spent cruising the pistes around Bellvarde and the Solaise in Val D'Isere. The snow depths are still great, but some of the pistes were a little scraped. Thos pistes in the sun for most of the day are now getting soft by lunchtime (eg Bluets from the Chaudannes down to Tignes Le Lac) but even late afternoon they are white rather than that funny slushy colour. So plenty of snow for an Easter late booking.
Tomorrow will be like today, blue skies all day and maybe a degree or two warmer. Both Sunday and Monday will be springlike with sunny periods and bubbly clouds, especially around the peaks. Tuesday through Thursday will be one or two degrees cooler, again sunny spells, fluffy clouds one or two of which will give showers, what arrives at ground level will depend of the time of day but it will always be snow above 2500m. After that it all becomes a little unpredictable.....
For those flying tomorrow, there will be no weather problems in the UK to affect flying. Over here, there may be some mist down the valleys, this shouldn't be dense enough to affect driving or at the airports. There is a slim chance of fog at Grenoble, but not dense enough to cause problems, Chambery are going for hazy conditions early on, if that were to thicken a bit more than the forecast then there could be one or two delays until the sun burns it off. But all in all it should be fine. Don't worry that its all green down the valley when you arrive, the winter wonderland is still in good order.

I decided to go skinning this morning for some exercise, so I skied down to Les Brevieres and then did the uphill bit on Myrtilles and Melezes, about 1hr 45 for 640m of altitude gain. All the birds were calling to each other, its amazing to hear them reply from such a long distance, a lot of noise out of a tiny bird. Spring was definitely in the air. After burning that many calories there was only one thing required, one of Rocco's pasta dishes in the Jam Bar!
Tomorrow will start with sunny periods, but after lunch there will be progressively more cloud, by mid afternoon the sky will be obscured, so it will feel a bit cooler than today. Monday will be mainly sunny with fluffy clouds on the peaks, there is a chance of a light shower in the afternoon, watch out for a breeze at height late on. Tuesday will be another day of sunny periods, that high level breeze will still be there. Wednesday looks like a day of showers, with a snowline around 2200m, so you may get a bit damp in the lower villages. Thursday currently looks like a sunny day and then more showers on Friday - so spring weather all week.
For those jumping on an aeroplane tomorrow I can foresee no weather problems in the UK, it will be hazy with the chance of drizzle almost everywhere. Over here it looks fine at Chambery and Geneva but Grenoble and Lyon are hedging their bets with a chance of fog before 10 0'clock. If it does pitch up it is unlikely to cause too many delays as it won't be that thick. Bing Bong Doors to automatic!

I decided on a day off today, I seem to have been out every day for too long. I spent the morning doing the Krypton Factor - or in more detail putting a Velux Blind up. They are great but the instructions leave a bit to be desired and those fiendish Danes must have very small hands that are very strong to get all the screws in! Anyway - done. As part of the Proprietor's scheme I have to have my apartment graded on Tuesday so I thought I'd better crack on!
We have had a mix of sun and cloud today the cloud is forecast to thicken tonight, but by the morning it should be back to sunny periods, it may be a couple of degrees cooler though. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday look like being blue skies and sunshine, the temperature may drop a degree or two but you won't notice in the strong sun. Just watch out for a cheeky breeze on the highest slopes from late on Tuesday through to Thursday, but it will be t shirt weather on the terraces of the local hostelries! There will be a bit more cloud over the weekend, then there may be some more snow next week.

Back from a fabulous week in the EK, and it lived up to expectations, as always. Conditions were generally excellent, with even a little fresh snow on one day. Pistes like Plan M off Solaise which are often icy were very easy and cruisable (although funnily enough, Rhone Alps which normally has nicer snow was very scraped and slick!). My proudest moment was skiing Epaule du Charvet, which usually has giant moguls on it. It didn't this time, which obviously made a real difference, but it's probably the steepest piste I've skied properly and I was sooo chuffed with myself. Face was in perfect condition and for the first time ever I just cruised down it rather than worrying about ice patches!! I didn't end up doing Sache because the group went over there on the day I wasn't well. Grattalu, my fave run in the EK was as awesome as ever. It's just the perfect pitch for carving down it as fast as possible, and I caught it at an empty moment.
However, the week got off to a sad start. We were sitting at the lovely Clochetons restaurant in the Manchet Valley, when there was suddenly a huge commotion from the tables and chairs in front of us with people screaming. We wondered what the hell was going on, then people started running everywhere, a medic ran through the restaurant and pisteurs on skidoos arrived within a couple of minutes.
What had happened was a snowboarder had come down some off piste at high speed and gone over a steep bank, landing on rocks in the river about 30 metres away from us, and the tables in front saw him do it. The bridge over the river was just a few metres from where he went over.
Minutes later the helicopter landed nearby and a medic walked past us saying "This is very bad, very bad". Meanwhile groups of skiers had gathered around to watch - we couldn't see the guy from where we were sitting, and didn't get up to look.
We finished lunch, went to ski Epaule then when we came back past the helicopter was still there an hour later, so we guessed he'd died, and indeed he had. He was a 35-year-old French snowboarder, and he died at the scene from severe head injuries. It did put rather a downer on the day, and we all found it difficult to stop thinking about - it just happened in an instant. Anyway, we couldn't dwell on it and there was nothing we could have done. RIP to the guy, and also thoughts to the people who saw it happen, it must have been horrific. We would have done too if we'd been looking at the time.
The following day we saw a woman lying unconscious on the slope on Piste H off Toviere, think it must have been a collision. We didn't hear any more so we presume she was OK. Saw LOTS of blood wagons during the week, more than on any holiday I've been on, no idea why.
So the rest of the week was a mix of lovely snow, blue skies and absolutely EPIC apres ski at Cocorico. The place is so much better now they've extended it. Popped into the Folie on the last day, and Saturday is a good day to go as it's less busy and you can grab a table and watch all the madness. Kely was on top form in a massive Indian chief head dress!
We enjoyed some very nice lunch stops - l'Ouillette was bliss for a couple of sun-soaked hours. It was very busy there! I think our nicest stop was the Edelweiss up in Fornet. We sat on a sunny terrace eating cold meat platters and drinking a beer, looking up at the mountains - perfect.
All in all, a great week. Val d'Isere and the EK remain firmly at the top of my resort list!!

A mini snowHeads Bash today I suppose, myself, Tigski, Lord and Lady GeorgeVII (and one uninitiate) set off for a fine cruise around the pistes of the Espace Killy. The monotony of the bright blue sky was punctured by a few fluffy white clouds coming from the Aoste Valley, so all in all a 'brochure day'. The pistes were not as hard this morning after a less cool night so high speed cruising all the way. We completed the Palet Sector followed by the Grande Motte (the bumps on Leisse are now huge!). After a quick lunch it was over to Val D'Isere, the Bellvarde and La Daille and then a quick tour round the bowl home. The runs in the sun are now getting soft in the afternoon, but not yet slushy, the soft stuff certainly makes me look better in the moguls. The Britash Championships are going on in Val Claret, just a training day today I think.
The weather predictions will swing to and fro through the week as Tignes-Val D'Isere finds itself under a ridge of high pressure sneaking up from the Azores, with low pressure over Greece and the UK trying to squeeze its way in. But it is going to be a good week all in all until about Easter Egg time. Tomorrow will be like today, the breeze will pick up at altitude in the afternoon but shouldn't spoil anything. Wednesday will be a sunny morning and sunny periods in the afternoon, the wind will be noticeably stronger and the air will be abut 3 degrees cooler, a layer in the rucksack anybody? The wind will be quite strong on Thursday, but it will be mainly sunny. Friday looks quite cloudy but the sun returns for Saturday. After that it looks a bit unsettled with some fresh snow to come for the high resorts.

Today was superb. I slapped the SPF50 on Oscar and I in anticipation of what looked like to be a cloudless day.
I followed Oscar's ski school group around Solaise and as soon as he finished we went straight up Olympic to give him his first run on Le Face. He did very well but did admit it was harder than he expected.
After that we headed over towards Tignes as he wanted a run on the Stade by Borsat. While there we bumped in to some of his UK coaches and fellow athletes who are out for next weeks childrens British Champs. The FIS version is on this week. He had a timed run and then his coach invited him to have a couple of runs on their GS course. After that he challenged me to a timed dual slalom. The least said about that the better.
We then headed up Borsat and looped round to Val Claret and up to Grande Motte. By this stage Oscar was beginning to tire. A very early start yesterday with a long day and late night took its toll and he said he wanted to go back for a sleep! We had a grumpy run down to Claret and headed up Freuss before looping down to La Daille and jumping on the bus back to the hotel. He managed 1.5 hours sleep before kids high tea and despite my best efforts he has gone to Kids Club tonight.
I'm booked on a clinic with tdc for the next 3 mornings so looking forward to that.

Another day of wall to wall sunshine, however, I was apartment bound due to the inspection and other paperwork that is an inevitable part of being an owner of a ski aprtment. I have just received notice of our AGM, more hours of translation!
Some clouds will build up tonight and will remain through tomorrow, it will be 3 or 4 degrees cooler, but watch out for a wind later in the day especially at altitude where it will feel chilly. Thursday will be similar but with less wind hopefully. Friday looks cloudy throughout, the sky will be mainly obscured unfortunately. Saturday will be a bit warmer, with a hint of breeze blowing the fluffy clouds around. Then its all change for Sunday as a front comes in from the North-West, timings are a little uncertain and it may arrive later in the day, which would be good as it means snow much further down the valley. But whatever happens it will be cloudy all day, more on the timings of the precipitation and the snow level later in the week.

A bit of a frustrating day for an off piste one with Evo2. There was hill fog in the village early doors, but it cleared. So we thought we were in for a good day, but there was a 'sea of clouds' down the valley which quickly worked its way up the valley. We got down Familial before they arrived, but as we tried to do Mini Spatule the hill fog became very very thick which made it all a bit tricky, especially as some of the fog froze to the slope making it a bit slick. The instructor even opted for 'Valée Perdu' down into La Daille as there was some definition but the snow was slick. After a trip down 'Sous La Toviére' we had lunch and set off for Tignes Les Boisses and the sun came out for a bit, so at least we could see the snow down a variant of Glattiers, it was still very varied. A final run down the chimney completed the day. We can all say we had a mixed bag of snow (as an understatement).
Tomorrow should be sunny, a bit warmer and the wind should drop by mid morning. Friday looks grey and cloudy with a chance of light snow in the afternoon as the wind picks up - may be a day for an early stack (or not bothering at all George!). Currently Saturday looks sunny, warm but windy at altitude. the guessing game continues for Sunday, it will be cloudy with a stiff breeze on high, there will be precipitation of all types, rain, sleet and snow depending on altitude and when exactly it arrives, the forecasts are disagreeing. Monday should bring sunny periods and a nice day, the rest of next week looks unsettled, winter is not yet over above 1700m!!
