Never understood the obsession with Saturday transfer. I understand the reasoning behind 'weekend only' transfer but if TO spread tansfers over F,S,S,M the 'problem' would disappear.
Yes, I did wish I had stayed home..............

@Maersk, couldn’t agree more. It’s controlled by accommodation providers though, isn’t it?
Summer holidays are broadly similar, perhaps a little less so than snowsports.
I much prefer a Friday or Sunday arrival, to make the scrum a bit more bearable.

@chocksaway, after a 3 year break I doubt I can remember all the lift names any more.
Is that steep drag lift over the Col de Fresse still going?

@Steve Angus, thank you. I’ve never for a moment considered myself anything but a confident, adventurous intermidiot.
I can recall many times when I’ve not had to really think too hard about skiing pistes. It just flowed and happened naturally.
After a 3 year break and injuries/operations I’ve definitely regressed. Rarely felt relaxed on relatively comfortable terrain in the Dolomites recently. The potentially dire implications of a big fall always in the back (or front) of mind. Legs simply won’t bend enough any more to improve much.
Even so, the benefits and outcomes I got from that fortnight were amongst the best of any ski trip. Specifically that I could still slide around some wonderful mountains, enjoying their beauty and ambience.
That’ll do for me. My cake finding techniques hit new heights instead.

I love that, particularly as an old bat for whom it's too late to get beyond intermidiot. My main but modest goal these days, which sometimes I achieve, is to ski tidily, both for my own satisfaction and vis-à-vis other users of the slopes. And if it's a contest between speed and the conservation of energy to keep going, the latter wins. (I find the tortoise and hare analogy applies sometimes when I'm skiing with others.) Sounds boring, but mostly it's OK. If, on the other hand, I'd had more time to ski when I was younger and fitter...

@moosepig, no, I don’t remember kadjar piste…where was it and is it still around (renamed?).
I think the 2 most bizarre ex-pistes I ever skied in the area were:
- Tunnel
- ?name sort of path through the trees from Laisinant to just short of Val D’Isere, more or less parallel with the road. Never have my knees spent so much time higher than my ears.
When skiing, anyway.

chocksaway - haha brilliant yes! Id agree I know all the lifts by name but only some of the pistes... however I think I can picture every twist and turn and lump and bump in every piste though!
PeakyB - its weird how they still insist on Saturdays for sure. "Is that steep drag lift over the Col de Fresse still going" - ????? Going back to the mid 90's I can't remember there being a drag there ever? You sure you meant there? I think your attitude to enjoying the mountains is the right attitude... I always say to people that you have to work out what it is that you want to get out of skiing... some people its skiing 9-5 without stopping, how many blacks can you tick off at what speed before the slowest person buys the beers... for others a green run, a coffee, another green run, nice lunch and then home is their idea of heaven... appreciating the beauty of the mountains is high on my list! The Tunnel piste - yea fallen by the wayside that is! However the Traversee du Laisenant IS still there as I think thats what youre talking about.
Hurtle - dont call yourself that. You've gotta find your own rhythm and go with it. Good on ya.
Kenzie - just trying to keep you on your toes.
moosepig - I think it might be renamed the Face du Noel before too long!!!!!!!! Ah yes the Kadjar piste. But blooming Genepy - why does Val and Tignes both have to have one! Thought one or the other could be more original!

2@Steve Angus, back in the past prior to bollin fresse chair there was a drag lift I think a double over the col de fresse it started at r junction of genepy/fresse .there was a double drag in reverse direction .

Fascinating - must have just predated me... I know / remember most of the other lifts on there but didnt know that. Cool! It will be interesting when they replace the Mont Blanc chair how they cope with that... ive heard rumours of a lift with a mid station that drops you off at the current top of the park then continues to the Fresse ridge somewhere... that might ease the pressure on the Tommeuse.

1983.... blimey. 1988 was my first (I think) week on snow... but didnt come to Val until a few years later for the first time. Those drags must have disappeared in the early 90's then I guess.

@PeakyB, Kadjar was the anémone/gentiane route down from Palafour. There was also one of the eponymous Renaults parked on an elevated stand on the snow front by the Maison... some sort of sponsorship thing I guess. Was a fair few years ago - early 2010s perhaps?

@moosepig, It was about 13 or 14 I think, it was defo PR (post retirement). The Kadjar on the plinth did not have a panel without a dent at the end of the season. Who’d have thought a Renault wasn’t up to a snowball fight
The Fresse drag was long gone before my first visit, a lot of that infra was changed in time for the 92 games.
Still it would be nice to go back to the old names, like Cocaine (now Silene), there’s still one of the old lollipops in the Bou Le Le.

Yes definitely a drag lift over the Fresse, as shown on that old piste map. I reckon it limped on until about 1994 or 1995.
It would break down very frequently. A couple of occasions, near lift closing time, I’ve dismounted the drag lift and clambered up and over the peak to enable return to La Daille.
Toviere hotel stay was a regular back then, well before it got smartened up.
Took me a few days to work out what the hell was going on to get on the Bollin/Fresse lift, when that was new

The drags were there the two season I did in Espace Killy in 1994/95 and 1995/96 seasons. The next time I went to Espace Killy a couple of years later they were gone.

I still find myself referring to the Aeroski lift

Keep using the old names - they are a code to describe where the decent skiing is whilst keeping the undesirables (young people? snowboarders? Parisians) in the dark.

Yep... Aéroski, Trolles, Piste H... does anyone who's been there a while ever use the new names?
Interesting to see from that '93 map just how many pistes across the ski area have been upgraded in difficulty, with none being downgraded as far as I can tell. But... isn't skiing easier now, with all the modern gear, than it's ever been?

What would a Carry On film in Val D’Isere have been named??

Jumping in about the Saturday transfer. We did Friday to Friday at Christmas, which we liked, as the process of collecting our equipment was better than the Sunday morning scrum we'd experienced after a late Saturday night arrival on the previous trip.
Ski schools all seem to base their weeks around the Saturday model though, with ski school running mainly Sunday to Friday. Of course some places allow you to book a Monday or Tuesday start, or you finish a day early like we did, but it added an extra layer of mild stress for us as where we were, they do their races on a Thursday or Friday and an award ceremony on the same afternoon. The children love doing the race and receiving a medal, and we wanted to be sure that our decision to book Fri-Fri didn't spoil this for them.

It's French, but set in Val D'Isere, Les Bronzes Font Du Ski, can get DVD of it. Best watching in French, can get it dubbed into English. Proper funny.

I guess the Saturday change over is just economies of scale - get everyone into the accommodation on the Saturday and you can downscale the reception services etc for the rest of the week. Same for the domestic services etc.
Plus most people do expect to leave work on a Friday and start back on a Monday. It also helps with the complexity of booking rooms. If you offer different start / end dates you're more likely to have some under-occupancy as the precise combo of start / end dates and size of the room / appt may not coincide with demand.

@Owlette,
The ski school pattern follows the accommodation pattern. If the accommodation pattern was more flexible the ski schools would follow suit.
