I don't think it's going to have much serious impact (in terms of damaging the snow on piste) anywhere except on Saturday.
For part of Saturday there will be rain up to somewhere between 1700m and 2000m along with high winds. So Saturday won't be great.
Above 2000m though that is going to be MORE snow on top of all the snow already.
Then as the week starts more snow falls to much lower levels (1000m).

The silver lining to the rising freezing levels is that the airports should be OK over the weekend...
Hopefully

The silver lining is that they fall quickly afterwards with lots more snow on Sunday and Monday.

You know it makes sense.

Jonny68, In the Innsbruck/Tirol thread - in the past I've looked at some slopes off the back of the park in Nordkette, but not knowing anything about what was below had never skied them. Two locals showed me the way today, big open face with deep fresh snow, very conducive to big fast surfy turns, no-one else there, bright sun and great visibility. Hard to beat!

SLF looking towards this weekend.
"Outlook until Saturday, 15.12.2012
Friday
In northeasterly regions, foehn-induced bright intervals are anticipated, elsewhere it will be heavily overcast. In western and southern regions, snowfall is expected during the night in particular. In western regions as evening approaches, it will begin to rain towards 2000 m. The southwesterly wind will be blowing at strong velocity. The danger of dry and wet avalanches is expected to increase somewhat.
Saturday
Skies will be heavily overcast by and large and snowfall is expected, particularly in western and southern regions. The avalanche danger will increase in western regions more than anywhere else."

And looking at this evening's output both GFS and ECM cool temperatures down after Saturday with more snow on the way, before taking things milder again towards the end of next week.

I am not very good at reading the squiggly, but the forecast is for lots of snow, but I cannot understand the lines, I thought the low green was the precipitation? What is the low blue control line? Any advice would be appreciated.

"At that range it could all shift around quite dramatically!"
And to underline that 06z brings in some much colder weather from the east that week. So at this stage a lot of uncertainty!

blahblahblah, as I said earlier any rain will quickly be followed by snow (heavy in the French Alps) as temperatures drop. So "damage" will be negligible, but Saturday probably won't be a great day for sitting on the terrace.

over quite a few years I've discovered that rain can do a lot less damage than you might fear, particularly as it is often on the leading edge of a system which is bringing colder air and snow (like the one approaching now). It is, however, unutterably miserable in a ski resort, when it's happening!
I'm talking piste skiing here, though. Perhaps the effects are worse off piste, where it's not going to be bashed, though maybe it can do something to help stabilise the snow, sometimes?

Chamonix meteo (which I've found best for local weather, having been recommended it by a ski instructor) is more optimistic about rain/snow levels. Useful for anyone in that general vicinity, provided you aim off a bit for local variation. I usually look at a range of forecasts and pick the one I like best! It keeps me happier and doesn't make a ha'porth of difference to what happens.

Quick glance at where snowfall is likely to be heaviest. The French Alps will take the brunt, but good across most of the Alps.

Hope i can get to resort on Sunday night ! Heading from Geneva to La Tania at 9pm and it looks like the snow will be pretty intense at that time.
How common is it for the authority's to shut the roads during heavy dumps like that predicted over the coming weekend ?
If so might be worth packing my sleeping bag !

very uncommon, IME. It's roads like the one up from Bourg St Maurice to Tignes that get closed, because of avalanche risk I think. The main roads - and indeed most local roads too - will be kept open with ploughs but maybe with restricted lanes open (and remember it's against the law, not to mention daft, to overtake a snowplough).
It's very common, in heavy dumps, for vehicles without chains to be stopped - so make sure you can get them on quickly if required. I wouldn't bother with a sleeping bag but you will presumably have plenty of warm clothing at hand? I'd also be sure to have some chocolate, and water. And keep the tank full enough that you can run your engine all night (exhaust clear of snow ) if necessary. Even if the road is open, it's always possible to get held up by an accident.
Ploughing is much less frequent overnight, especially on minor roads.

Here's SLF looking at Friday and the weekend.
"Weather forecast until Friday, 14.12.2012
In western regions, snowfall is expected during the night, in southern regions still continuing during the day down to low altitudes. In northeastern regions, foehn-caused bright intervals will appear. Due to the strong velocity southerly foehn winds, it will become very mild in northern regions over the course of the day....
Outlook until Sunday, 16.12.2012
Saturday
Skies will be heavily overcast and in all regions of Switzerland precipitation is anticipated, especially intense in western regions. The snowfall level in northern regions will be at 1700 m to begin with, in western regions at 2000 m and then drop gradually lower. In southern regions snowfall is expected down to low altitudes. The southwesterly wind will be blowing at strong velocity, then later shift to westerly. The danger of dry and wet avalanches is expected to increase, particularly in western regions.
Sunday
In northern regions above approximately 1000 m, frequent snowfall is anticipated. The avalanche situation will continue to remain tense. In southern regions it will be partly sunny and the avalanche danger is expected to diminish."

A report on yesterdays's fatal avalanche in Serfaus.
http://lawinenwarndienst.blogspot.co.at/2012/12/details-zum-todlichen-lawinenunfall-im.html
A 40 year old Czech skier killed. The first avalanche death in Austria this season.
- Triggered by the first skier, his two friends were above the fracture and thus survived.
- 30cm deep avalanche, 150m wide, 300m long.
- Everyone in the 3 person party had transceivers.
- However, his colleagues could not identify his precise position.
- Having managed to fetch help from the lift staff the victim was uncovered within 20 minutes, but sadly died in hospital last night.
- The slope was steep 40 degrees, with a weak layer beneath rain crust.

SLF's summary of the first half of December for Switzerland in German (and French).
http://www.slf.ch/schneeinfo/wochenbericht/2012-13/1201/index_DE
Interesting looking at Figure 8 (Snowdepth rank). It shows the heights on 11 December ranked against previous years. The figures highlighted in red are the highest since records began (the second figure is the number of years since records began). So the deepest snow recorded for 73, 66 and 65 years in places.
Also worth noting the comparison between now and winter 2011/12 in terms of Gleitschneelawinen.
In the period covered no fatalities in Switzerland.
