Cloudy today and not so warm, which must be good for the snow! Chatel side this morning, and the earlier hour with the clocks changing was very worthwhile. All the higher runs over there were fine and down to the gondola at Chatel Linga. Perdrix Blanche enjoyable too - don't think anyone had been down there. Even the blue back to Lindarets had not been chopped up and mogulled and after a quick glass of wine at the Ferme the run back down to Ardent was better than it has been.

Markoncarp, enjoyed??? why would i enjoy the fact that peoples holidays are not going to be as good as they thought? Just telling it as it is, and as 2 people on this page have also confirmed. Its been a poor season, i wish there could be snow 12 months of the year if there could be.

It was raining in Les Gets, heavily in the night on our metal roof... light dusting of snow over towards the top of Mt Chery. Rather dull and grey outside

I sympathise with the roof issue - also top floor with no space between the roof and the ceiling and it bucketed it down last night in Lausanne.
Begs the question, any of that fall as snow on the Swiss side? Forecast has 6cm at the top yesterday...I have my fingers crossed, but it looks set to be very warm this weekend.

Markoncarp, ah, but can he see the tarmac on the roads still!
Certainly looks an improvement. Very wet here in Les Gets as it rained seemingly most of the night, sun trying to come out now.
Lovely day in Avoriaz yesterday, clear blue skies and really cold first thing in the morning so nice and hard pistes. Went over to Switzerland for one last look.

I did notice that Pamski!
I AM looking forward to getting out on Friday though. Nice week of Spring skiing is just what the Dr ordered with regards the last trip of the year. Its all about skiing when you want to ski rather than grinding out the hours. Nice rattly mornings, the perfection of the slopes around 11am and the lovely ski back just after lunch over slushy bumps...

Markoncarp, Friday, Saturday and Sunday look like clear days at the moment.
We shall make the most of Friday and Saturday and heading home (that home) on Sunday, a couple of weeks earlier than planned. Moved house in November and not been there much since then so builders starting, boat in the water, and a daughter's wedding now to sort -

Hi guys, first post!
Were heading to Morzine on Fri 8th Apr, and wondered where you would recommend to head to find high snow? I know we can get high in Avoriaz or the Linga side of Chatel. Were driving, so I don't mind a drive out to find snow. Is Flaine likely to be any better? Or would we benefit from heading further afield? Reading other reports on the forum, nowhere seems very good. If we spend half the morning driving to another resort, we'll miss the best of conditions.
Next year were booked to go in Feb, as usual, so I won't spend the first 5 mins at work staring at green hills on webcams (I hope). Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I would think that Avoriaz will be fine.... and its close. Like you said, you would end up spending an hour (at least) driving somewhere with no guarantees of better conditions.

I certainly wouldn't bother going to Flaine - be surprised if it's any better than Avoriaz. Only place worth going for higher altitude, anywhere in the vicinity, is the Grand Montets.

njmidd, it will take about 50 mins to an hour to get up to Flaine - we went last week - and I would only drive to the top and Flaine itself at the moment.
And yes, either drive to Ardent and take the gondola up to Lindarets and then on to Chatel - [we have just got back from there this morning - and all fine, very hard first thing as my head found out to its cost when going down the very rutted run down to Planachaux from the top of the Chaux Fleurie, muttered my thanks to my helmet as I still saw stars for a few moments] - or drive to Prodains and take the chair up from there.

Returned from Morzine last night. had 5 days out there. Very varied skiing conditions. Did not bother with Morzine/les gets as recommended not to. Only had to look at the state of the Pleney to see why!
Went up to Ardent/Lindarets 2 days, and Avoriaz side for other 2 days. Fine up top. Lots of fresh snow to ski in yesterday. However, runs lower down are slushy and cut up. Avoriaz fares better in my opinion. Temps were high. Lunches outside were the order of the day. Only bothered with 1/2 day lift passes. Skied from 8.30-1. No lift Queues, some pistes very empty.
So long as you are prepared to go up to the top, there is still plenty left to ski.
Shorts and T-shirts much in evidence in town, which seemed wrong somehow.
I have to say, it was better than I thought it was going to be, but then again our expectations were low

njmidd, If you want to be really snow sure you could try Verbier. The drive to Le Chable from Chatel is just under an hour and I guess you need to add 45 mins to that to get over from Morzine. Its a long way but you can be sure of good late season snow. The gondola from Le Chable opens around 8.30 and delivers you to over 2000m in about 15 mins.

njmidd, I've skied in Flaine, Les Houches, La Tour and Les Grands Montets in the last month. The only thing that's appreciably better than Avoriaz is Les Grands Montets. But you're either going to have to love bumps or like skiing properly off-piste.
They haven't pisted all of the runs in the Flaine bowl this season because it's so rocky in the bowl that they need quite a lot of snow to level things off.
I've not been, but the snow in the Aosta valley, and Courmayer in particular, has had some good reports.

I agree with lgen31's general assessment. I did a couple of hours this morning before doing "proper" work. I skied from Ardent over to Linga and back. Conditions are generally what you'd expect mid-April, rather than the beginning of April, but there are surprisingly few rocks or bare patches (none that I encountered).
I do need to sharpen the skis though!

FlyingStantoni, I went to Courmayer on the recommendation of midgetbiker, he was delivering me some skis and I wanted somewhere to try them out as Les Gets was a little lacking in the white stuff, went through the Mont Blanc tunnel, Green on one side then emerging the other to find a foot of snow on the road barriers, a nice surprise I can tell you. As were the new planks!

Thanks for the tips guys!
I'll try Avoriaz / Chatel, and if it's not that good then head off as per your recommendations above. I'll report back on my return.

Spent yesterday morning doing short turns down the Coupe De Monde in Avoriaz. Surprisingly good snow all the way down to the bottom of Prodains.
We made a quick sortie over to Fornet to try some bumps, but couldn't manage to catch the bumps
The bad news is that the beginners' area in Avoriaz was a bit of a mess when we passed through at around 13:30; Super Morzine wasn't running and brown patches were starting to poke through at the top of the run down from Linderats down to Ardent.
But you can still ski down to Ardent.
Personally, I think it looks like the second or third week of April.
We had a night out with a bunch of ski instructors last night to celebrate MrsFS passing her BASI Level 2.
The official news from the Morzine and Les Gets tourist offices is that the resorts will stay open until they close, but the British-run ski schools are voting with their feet. Their view is that the resorts have reached that tipping point where conditions are now markedly deteriorating day to day. Some of the instructors likened it to the bad days of the 80s.
My understanding is that BASS and The Snow Institute are relocating to Ardent / Linderats and Alpine Learning Curves and Les Gets Snowsports are relocating to the top of Prodains. But much wine was involved - so please check if you're booked into lessons.

Skied today and it was a mixed bag really. Parked at the bottom of Pre La Joux and skied over to Lidarets via Plaine Dranse. You can tell that things are starting to deteriorate now but the runs were OK and when we got to Fornet the snow was actually very nice. It was a very hot day today so by 11am it was starting to slush up, but we stayed high around Fornet before skiing back to Plaine Dranse. The Red down to Plaine Dranse was the 1st time I actually thought the conditions were NOT enjoyable. With that in mind, we've decided to drive to Lindarete tomorrow and get the bubble up...

Hi all
Back from Morzine yesterday. Snow is all but finished in the Morzine / Les Gets sector of the PDS. A torrential downpour of rain midweek did nothing to help. Having said that we did find the runs down from Pleney to Les Gets good fun and we could still ski into Morzine itself from Pleney for the entire week. Nyon, Chamossiere and Ranfoilly all now closed as is Mont Chery. Super Morzine stuggling badly and may well now be closed as well. As for Avoriaz this was much better. Around the town itself the snow is brown with the mud coming through but up higher things improve. Area around Chavanette, Fornet and Arare all good as is the Chatel sector (Plaine Dranse and Linga). In my opinion this sector had the best snow we came across all week. On the Swiss side of the PDS Mossette still open (just) as are the runs back towards the bottom of the Swiss Wall but like Morzine / Les Gets you are skiing ever narrowing strips of slush surrounded by grass and Alpine flowers. Despite all the above I found more than enough to ski each day and a good week was had by all. Pisteurs should be mentioned for doing a truly outstanding job in keeping the slopes in good shape despite extremely limited resources. To have kept open as much as they had in Morzine / Les Gets was a miracle. I take my hat off to them all and wanted to post a public thank you to them.

I'd suggest that you get it back down again.
The snow near the bottom of the run back down is leg-breakingly heavy - especially near carnage corner. The only way to ski it is hard and fast. But that is very hard to do with any safety given the numbers of people on the run.

Thanks snowandtrek. She's relieved more than pleased. Last time she didn't think she'd pass. This time she wanted to.
The knee's (largely) fine again thanks. I was skiing on it at the weekend. Two days of bad pain; it started to bruise and 8-9 days later it was largely ok.
How's your knee getting along?
Didn't Mrsnowandtrek do something BASI-related this season...?
